PURCHASE, N.Y. — Following a four-game skid, the Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team picked up a come-from-behind 17-12 victory over Rutgers University-Camden Saturday, March 30 at GoValiants.com Field.
The Valiants got off to a slow start, falling behind 4-0 in the first nine minutes of the game. Manhattanville was able to then close the gap to two following goals by sophomore midfielder
Diana Piacquadio (Port Washington, N.Y./Gilmour Academy) and freshman midfielder
Lara Keenan (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central). Rutgers-Camden's Cara Racobaldo would then score back-to-back goals to extend the Scarlet Raptors' lead back to four, but the Valiants responded by scoring five of the next six goals.
Freshman attack
Brialee Logue (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) got the scoring started for the home team, followed by Piacquadio picking up her second of the day a minute later. With five minutes remaining in the first half, sophomore midfielder
Hailey DeStasio (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) found the back of the net, followed by Piacquadio and Keenan scoring late to help the Valiants draw even at 7-7 at the half.
Rutgers-Camden started off the second half with two goals in the first three minutes by Carly Gregg to reclaim the lead, but Manhattanville would then have their best run of the day, scoring six unanswered goals. Keenan and Logue scored three and two goals, respectively, and sophomore attack
Bella Cosentino (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) picked up a goal as well, putting the Valiants ahead 13-9 midway through the second half.
Following two goals by Rutgers-Camden to cut the lead to two, DeStasio would pick up a goal with the Valiants down a player to give the home team a 14-11 lead. Keenan, DeStasio, and Logue would all add one more goal the rest of the way to give Manhattanville a satisfying 17-12 victory.
The freshman stood out for the Valiants, as Keenan had six goals while Logue picked up four. DeStasio and Piacquadio each had three goals, while Cosentino score one goal and added two assists. Junior goalkeeper
Bella Marchiselli (Williston Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) picked up the victory for Manhattanville, making 11 saves on the day. The Valiants had 37 shots on goal to Rutgers-Camden's 23 and lead in draw controls 17-11, while being successful on 22 of 25 clear attempts.
The Valiants now kick off Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play in their next game, when they host Eastern University Wednesday, April 3 at GoValiants.com Field, with game time scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
