MADISON, N.J. – With six regular-season contests remaining, the Manhattanville College softball team is on pace for the second-most wins in program history after picking up victories 30 and 31 today, April 17, on the road at Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom opposition FDU-Florham.
Manhattanville (31-2, 11-1 MACF) finished off the Red Devils (12-17, 5-7 MACF) 12-1 in six innings in game one following a clean outing from graduate student pitcher
Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster), who struck out four and did not allow an earned run on just three hits. Game two saw senior
Aarin Hartenstein's (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) streak of seven straight starts without allowing an earned run snapped, but fortunately she continued her dominant season with yet another win to remain unbeaten at 15-0 as the Valiants bested FDU-Florham 9-3.
Game 1
With neither squad scoring in the first inning, senior
Evonne Torres (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Pioneer) led off the top of the second with a solo homer – her 10th of the season. Graduate student
Alexis Ventarola (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) added an RBI double later in the inning. Sophomore
Isela Casillas (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) collected a pair of RBI following a single down the rightfield line to make it 4-0, and rookie
Giovanna Liggett (Fountain Valley, Calif./Edison) closed out the inning's scoring with an RBI groundout to short.
In the top of the third, the Valiants scratched two more across thanks to a sacrifice fly from senior
Sophia Chapelone (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) and another run-scoring double from Ventarola. FDU scored its only run of the game in the bottom half on an unearned play at the plate during a double steal attempt. In the top of the fifth, Ventarola plated Chapelone with a one-run triple as she finished the game with three extra base hits and a trio of RBI.
Up by seven heading into the top of the sixth, the Valiants needed just one to put the run-rule in play, but ended up getting four more before the Red Devils were unable to answer in the bottom half. Sophomore
Ali Orduna (Orange, Calif./Villa Park) began with a one-run double to right centerfield to plate junior
Steph Muller (Port Jervis, N.Y./Port Jervis), followed by junior
Samantha Jedrey's (La Canada Flintridge, Calif./La Canada) RBI single to left. Hartenstein was next to crack an RBI double to make it 11-1 before rookie
Jessi Alvarado (Norwalk, Calif./Gahr) closed out the scoring by crossing the plate from third on a wild pitch.
Game 2
On a crazy play in the top of the first, the scoring began when senior
Desiree Buboi (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran) crossed the plate during a pickle play for Torres. Liggett doubled that lead to start the third with a one-run single to right before Buboi singled up the middle to plate Casillas and make it 3-0 at the time. FDU-Florham trimmed that lead back to 3-1 in the bottom half.
After scoring a run on an error in the fourth, the Valiants scored two more in the fifth to make it 6-1 thanks to a two-run single to left from Hartenstein. The highlight of the inning came in the second at-bat, though, when Buboi collected her third hit of the game and 200th of her career – she becomes the first Valiant in program history to accomplish that fete.
The Red Devils scored two in the home half to make it 6-3, but with one out a runner on second, Liggett blasted a home run – her second of the season – to make it 8-3. Then, with a two outs and the bases empty, Torres hit her second home run of the doubleheader and 11th of the season to make it 9-3.
Manhattanville is now off until Tuesday, April 23, when the Valiants play host to the College of New Rochelle in a doubleheader at Manhattanville Softball Field, with game one scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
