PURCHASE, NY – The Manhattanville College baseball team got top-to-bottom production from its lineup and solid late inning relief from a pair of underclassmen on its way to a 12-9 win over the Purchase College Panthers in the Battle for Anderson Hill Road Tuesday, April 2.
Seniors
Kieran Corrigan (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) combined for six hits and four runs scored, with Corrigan adding three RBI's; juniors
Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and
Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) combined for seven hits and four runs, with Iannarilli adding four RBI's. Sophomore
Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) added two hits and the sophomore trio of
Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk),
Justin Ramos (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) and
Matt Tuite (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) all had a hit, a run scored, and an RBI. In all, eight players finished with at least one hit and one run for Manhattanville (10-8). Sophomore
Noah Garcia (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit) allowed one run in three innings in relief, earning his first win as a Valiant, while freshman
Nick Carita (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) closed out the win for his first collegiate save.
For Purchase (11-6), Jemal Betances finished with two hits, two runs, and two RBI's, one of four Panthers who recorded multi-hit games.
The Panthers led 4-0 after an inning and a half. RBI singles from Ramos and Iannarilli in the second and third kept the Valiants within striking distance. Betances launched a two-run homer in the top of the fourth and the Panthers tacked on another run, taking a 7-2 lead.
Corrigan and Scoggins singled to lead off the fifth and came around to score on a double by Iannarilli and sacrifice fly by Shaffer, respectively. Purchase grabbed a run back in the top of the sixth for
In the sixth, Lynch led off with a walk, advanced to second when Matero was hit by a pitch, then stole third, putting runners on the corners with no one out. After Corrigan singled Lynch in, Scoggins dropped a sacrifice bunt, putting Matero and Corrigan in scoring position. Iannarilli doubled both in, trimming the lead to one, then scored to tie the game when Shaffer reached on an error.
The Valiants took their first lead in the game in the seventh when Corrigan doubled in Lynch. RBI singles by Tuite, Lynch and Corrigan in the eighth gave the Valiants a 12-8 cushion. Carita retired the first two batters in the ninth before Purchase pushed across a run, but with the tying run at the plate, the right-hander induced a groundout to short to end the game.
Manhattanville returns to the diamond tomorrow for another future Skyline Conference game with the SUNY Old Westbury Panthers. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
