PURCHASE, N.Y. — In the team's final game of the 2019 season, the Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team ended the season on a high note, knocking off King's College (Pa.) 17-11 Saturday, April 27 at GoValiants.com Field.
Freshman midfielder
Lara Keenan (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) picked up the first goal of the game just 41 seconds in, giving Manhattanville a 1-0 lead early, with sophomore attack
Bella Cosentino (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) picking up the assist. Cosentino would get a goal of her own minutes later to put the Valiants up by two, with sophomore midfielder
Melissa O'Mara (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) providing an assist.
Following a King's goal to cut the lead to 2-1, sophomore midfielder
Hailey DeStasio (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) picked up a goal off an assist by freshman attack
Brialee Logue (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet), but the Monarchs would answer back with three consecutive goals in a 57-second span to put King's ahead by a 4-3 score.
Minutes later, O'Mara scored her first goal since returning to the lineup to tie the game at four, and the Valiants would take the lead just 14 seconds later when Cosentino scored her second of the day. Both teams picked up one more goal before the end of the half, giving the Valiants a 6-5 lead at the intermission.
Coming out of the break, O'Mara continued her strong game, scoring her third of the day to push the Valiants lead to two goals. King's cut the lead to one following a goal by Bailey Jordan, but Manhattanville would then take control of the game, scoring five of the next six goals to stretch their lead to 12-7. O'Mara and DeStasio each scored twice during the run, and Logue added a goal as well.
The Monarchs then picked up one more to get them within four goals, but the Valiants put the game out of reach with four straight goals down the stretch. Cosentino, DeStasio, O'Mara, and sophomore midfielder
Diana Piacquadio (Port Washington, N.Y./Gilmour Academy) all picked up one goal apiece to put the finishing touches on a 17-11 victory for the home team on Senior Day.
On the day, the Valiants held a 33-25 advantage in shots on goal, picked up 43 ground balls to King's 32, and won the draw control battle 21-9. In her first game since returning to action, O'Mara scored six goals and added one assist to go along with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. DeStasio added four goals and seven ground balls, while Cosentino picked up three goals, two assists, and two caused turnovers. Keenan scored two goals to end the season with a team-leading 49, while also adding three assists, four ground balls, three caused turnovers, and 12 draw controls. Junior goalkeeper
Bella Marchiselli (Williston Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) picked up the victory in net for the Valiants, making 14 saves on 25 shots faced.
The team now says goodbye to the two graduating members of the team, senior defender
Alex Breen (South Windsor, Conn./Kingswood Oxford School) and junior defender
Lexy DeLeo (Meriden, Conn./Orville H. Platt). Breen picked up three ground balls and caused three turnovers on the day, while DeLeo added two ground balls in her final game.
