Baseball Rewrites Program Record Books in 33-8 MAC Freedom Win Over Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Manhattanville College baseball team posted a dominating 33-8 win over the Wilkes University Colonels in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play Sunday, April 7.

Manhattanville (12-10, 8-3 MACF) brought the artillery to Artillery Park, scoring in eight different innings, including six innings with three runs or more, setting team records for runs and hits (32). Every Manhattanville starter had at least one run and, by the top of the fourth inning, at least one hit each. In all, 16 different players recorded at least one hit and one run, while 13 players drove in at least one run each.

Junior Stephen Merrill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) launched two 2-run homers and finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and six RBI's, joined in the six-RBI club by classmate Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) who finished 4-for-5 with a run scored. Fellow junior Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) tied the single game record with five runs scored; the utility man finished the game 4-for-5 and reached base seven times.

Elsewhere, sophomore Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) finished 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI's, senior Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) finished 3-for-5 with four runs and two RBI's, sophomore Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) homered and finished 2-for-5 with three RBI's and junior Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

For Wilkes (10-14, 5-7 MACF), Brady Wing finished 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a run scored, one of five Colonels who recorded two hits.

Manhattanville scored three in the first, added four in the second, then tacked on five more in the third, with Iannarilli driving in three with doubles in both the first and second innings, and Merrill crushing a pair of two-run four-baggers in both the second and third innings.

The Valiants continued their hot start with a nine-run fourth inning, thanks in large part to a three-run homer from Shaffer and a three-run double by Matero, part of a run of eight straight Valiants who reached base safely in the frame.

The bats cooled a bit for Manhattanville in the fifth and sixth innings, as the visitors managed just one run across the two frames, but the offense started clicking again in the seventh. Sophomore Matt Tuite (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) drove in Scoggins with an RBI single and Merrill reached six RBI's with a two-run single.

Freshman Anthony Quatrochi (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) made it 27-8 in the eighth with a two-run single, then made it 30-8 with another RBI single in the ninth, then scored on a single by sophomore Matthew Careccia (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac). A two-run double by senior Matt Coleman (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) provided the day's final hit and runs for the Valiants.
