Softball’s Season Comes to an End with Loss to Lynchburg at NCAA Regionals

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. – The Manhattanville College softball team ended its 2019 season Saturday afternoon, May 11, with a tough 4-1 loss to the University of Lynchburg. The game was halted for nearly two hours due to a weather delay, but resumed play in the top of the sixth inning to complete the game.

For the Valiants (41-4), they complete the season with several achievements, including tying the program record for victories in a season at 41, set back in 2016 when Manhattanville advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals. The Hornets (33-14) now advance to the championship series versus Virginia Wesleyan University, scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, May 12.

Senior Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) got the start for Manhattanville but had a tough outing after throwing a career-high nine innings against this same Lynchburg squad yesterday, Friday, May 10. Hartenstein went 1.2 innings before sophomore Jasmine Feliciano (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) entered the contest in relief in the second inning and had an outstanding outing for the Valiants. She finished with 5.1 shutout innings and did not allow a hit in her first-career NCAA outing.

At the conculsion of the NCAA Viginia Beach Regional, two members of the Valiants were selected to the All-Tournament team: sophomore Isela Casillas (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) and senior Evonne Torres (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Pioneer).

In addition to their 41 wins, the Valiants have now won at least 20 games in seven of the last eight seasons, including four straight. As a team, Manhattanville ended the season with 495 hits, breaking the previous record of 460 which was also set back in 2016.

Individually, in the win over University of Scranton, Torres hit two home runs to tie Alicia Marino's single-season record from 2017, while Casillas collected a hit against Lynchburg today to stretch out her program-record hitting streak to 21 games, which she broke earlier today against Scranton. Additionally, Torres also set the new program single-season mark with 121 total bases, surpassing teammate and classmate Desiree Buboi's (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran) mark of 120 from 2016. Feliciano picked up three saves this season, which makes her the program's single-season leader as well.

The Valiants bid farewell to six key members of their squad in graduate students Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and Alexis Ventarola (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) and seniors Sophia Chapelone (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon), Hartenstein, Torres and Buboi. Manhattanville will put together a new-look squad next season as it returns to the Skyline Conference in 2020. The Valiants dominated the conference under head coach Dale Martin from 2002-07 before moving to the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom, winning four regular-season titles, three conference tournament titles and earning four NCAA bids.
