WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Following a great first season since reinstatement, the Manhattanville College men's tennis team fell to Wilkes University 5-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Championship Saturday, May 4.
The team of junior
Juan Huertas (Bogotá, Colombia/La Salle (H.S.) (Calif.)) and sophomore
Jan Senkerik (Zlin, Czech Republic/The Hill Academy) fell in first doubles by a score of 8-4, followed by an 8-2 loss in second doubles by the freshman team of
Alvaro de la Plaza (Malaga, Spain/Homeschooled (Laurel Springs, Calif.)) and
Dylan Mund (Washington Township, N.J./Westwood Regional). Junior
Alex Fleischman (Riverside, Conn./King) and senior
Soya Goto (Rye, N.Y./Rye) dropped an 8-1 decision in third doubles, putting the Valiants behind 3-0 after doubles play.
Huertas dropped a 6-2, 6-0 matchup in first singles action, followed by de la Plaza picking up a 6-2, 6-1 victory in third singles to get Manhattanville in the win column. Senkerik fell in second singles in a three-set affair (6-3, 3-6, 1-6), giving the Colonels the five wins needed to clinch the match and the championship.
The Valiants finished their first season since 2011-12 with a 10-7 record, including a 6-1 record in MAC Freedom play. With several key players returning, the team now looks forward to the 2019-20 season.
