GENEVA, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team fell short in its second game of the William Smith Classic. Saint Lawrence University topped the Valiants 1-0 in overtime on Sept. 15.
The Valiants (4-3) played extraordinary defense in the first quarter holding the score to zero. Saint Lawrence's (2-4) Maggie Green took the first shot of the game that junior keeper
Elaina Nacinovich (Patterson, N.Y./Carmel) was able to deny. Green got the rebound, took another shot and Manhattanville's defense blocked her attempt and took the ball out of the defensive end of the field. Senior
Robin Boot (Bedum, Netherlands/H.N. Werkman College) reverse swept the first shot for the Valiants that was kicked away by SLU goalie Sydney Giacin.
It was a close call for the Valiants when senior
Ameerah Thomas (Norfolk, Va./Granby) ran out to block a shot off of a Saints penalty corner. Thomas blocked Isabel Thompson's shot but the ball deflected off Thomas' stick in the air straight towards the goal. Nacinovich was able to smack the ball down on the field, stopping the deflection attempt as well as an additional shot from Green keeping the score tied at zero.
After playing a tough first quarter, sophomore
Raquel Brown (Claymont, Del./Brandywine) ran up the field and took the Valiants' second shot of the day trying to pull them ahead. A penalty corner was called in the Saints' favor but Manhattanville's defense was quick enough to block the shot and get the ball.
The third quarter was back-and-forth between both teams tallying a save and Manhattanville earning one corner opportunity. In the fourth, the Valiants had another penalty corner opportunity and denied two corner attempts by the Saints. Junior
Arnise King (Wilmington, Del./Concord) tried to get a shot off to end the game in the Valiants favor but Giacin denied her chances and sent the game into overtime.
After six minutes into overtime, the Saints received back-to-back corner chances. After the first attempt was unsuccessful, the second saw Green drive the ball on target and Mckenzie Haberl was able to deflect the shot past the Valiants defense for the win.
The Valiants will host Division II Saint Thomas Aquinas College at GoValiants.com Field in Purchase, N.Y., this Thursday, Sept. 19, at 7:00 p.m.
