PURCHASE, N.Y. -- The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team made quick work of yet another Skyline Conference opponent Thursday night, Sept. 26, defeating Yeshiva University in straight sets (25-4, 25-5, 25-8). The Valiants have now won eight straight matches, including the last two in conference play.
The Valiants' (10-4, 2-0 Skyline) victory over the Maccabees (0-13, 0-8 Skyline) was never in doubt as the home squad jumped all over the visitors from the start of the first set. The star early on for Manhattanville was rookie right-side hitter
Felicity Hoffert (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East), who totaled an outstanding 10 service aces in the first set. She finished with two kills and a dig to go with that ace total. In all, 16 Valiants saw the court Thursday night, led offensively by middle blockers sophomore
Emma Dronzek (Yonkers, N.Y./Sacred Heart) and rookie Hannah Pena. The former led all players with eight kills on eight swings for a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage, while the latter totaled seven kills on eight swings for an extremely efficient .875 hitting percentage. Pena also notched a pair of solo blocks on the night.
As a team, the Crimson and White hit an efficient .467 (38 kills on 60 swings). Joining Dronzek and Pena was sophomore outside hitter
Alejandra Figueroa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Rosa-Bell) and rookie setter
Vianca Vital (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Perpetuo Socorro). Figueroa finished with six kills on nine swings (.667), while Vital notched a match-best 26 assists, an ace and five kills on six swings (.667). Freshman setter
Caylee Premoli (White Plains, N.Y./School of the Holy Child) had a great night as well and notched six aces, all in the third set, to go with three digs and an assist, while senior outside hitter
Marissa Shamansky (Woodbury, Conn./Henry Abbott Tech) notched a pair of kills as well as four service aces. Last but not least, reigning Skyline Libero of the Week
Geena Torres (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) led all players with seven digs.
The squad will return to action this Saturday morning, Sept. 28, when it plays host to Clarks Summit University for an 11:00 a.m. match. The Valiants faced the Defenders at Kennedy last season in their first-ever meeting and topped the visitors in straight sets.
