THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's basketball team fell in a tough Skyline Conference matchup on the road Thursday night, Jan. 16, at Maritime College. The Valiants held a healthy lead early in the second half, but a surge from the hosting Privateers eventually downed Manhattanville.
The Crimson and White (7-6, 2-2 Skyline) outscored Maritime (5-8, 1-3 Skyline) 46-36 in the first, led by 10 points from senior
JoJo Cobbs (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff) (5-of-7 in the half), while juniors
Mike Granda (Monroe Township, N.J./St. Joseph) and
Wesley Kra (Queens, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy Memorial) each notched eight. The Valiants eventually grew that lead to a 13-point advantage at 53-40 with 10:45 remaining in the second.
Unfortunately, the Privateers were able to claw all the way back and take their first lead of the half with just over 10 minutes remaining. Maritime pushed its advantage to six points with just under three minutes in regulation, forcing a Valiant timeout.
The Crimson and White were able to regroup during the break and Cobbs immediately sank a layup and drew the fall, converting on the three-point-play to make it a 75-72 game with 2:31 remaining. Rookie
Khari Taylor (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) and Kra hit their next two baskets to put Manhattanville ahead once again at 76-75 with 1:10 left on the clock.
Maritime jumped ahead 77-76 with under a minute, but Cobbs made a free throw to tie it up with 00:29 remaining. The Privateers then nailed a jumper – and-one – with 00:05 left and a desperation three-point attempt from sophomore
Petey Galgano (New Rochelle, N.Y./Wilbraham & Monson Academy (Mass.)) as the clock expired fell short.
Highlights:
- Cobbs led the Valiants with 16 points and seven rebounds.
- Granda finished with 13 points, three assists, three steals and three boards.
- Sophomore Jake Dunn (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) ended with 12 points, four boards, three assists and three steals.
- Kra notched another strong performance, finishing with 10 points on 5-of-7 from the floor to go with four boards and a block.
Manhattanville returns to the court for a home Skyline contest this Saturday, Jan. 18, when Sarah Lawrence College comes to Kennedy Gymnasium. The two programs have not met since 1976.
