PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team won its 11th game in a row over Farmingdale State College today, Jan. 18. The Valiants trailed the Rams in the beginning of the first quarter but came out with a 79-55 win. Both junior
Amanda Pemberton (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) and freshman
Jamie Smith (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) had season high performances and finished the game with a double-double.
Pemeberton was one rebound shy at the half to secure a double-double but totaled 19 points and 14 rebounds by the end of the game. She also added two assists and one steal to her statistics. Going into the second half she shot 100% from the field making 5-5 buckets. By the end of the game she shot 81.8% from the field and 100% from the free throw line. Pemberton was also the Valiants leading scorer of the night.
Smith today totaled 15 points and 10 rebounds. She shot 77.7% from the field and 50.0% from the foul line. She also made four assists and blocks throughout the game.
One of the first few inbounds the Valaints (13-1,9-1 Skyline) passed in resulted in a basket that included four players on the court. Junior
Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) was inbounded the ball, she hit freshman
Madison Fields (Grantsville, Utah/Grantsville) midcourt as they were being pressed. Fields then found junior
Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) down court and passed it to her. Coutu next hit Pemberton under the basket for a layup.
When the Rams (6-8,4-6 Skyline) were up 14-11 Pemberton was passed the ball under the basket by Smith. Pemberton had two defenders on her but went up for a layup; she made it and cut the Ram's lead. After Pemberton's basket Smith responded with made a layup. After that the Valiants didn't trail the Rams for the rest of the game.
A key moment in the first was the closing shot from Shore. Pemberton secured a defensive rebound with nine tenths of a second left and passed it to Shore at half court. Shore took three dibbles from half court, threw up a shot and sunk it at the buzzer.
Later in the second, sophomore
Claudia Valentin (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin School) stole the ball as Manhattanville was ahead 31-19. She grabbed the ball around half court and then chucked it to Pemberton who was once again under the basket and was able to make another layup.
The Crimson and White made six second chance points in the fourth and the first one came from Smith. She grabbed sophomore
Faith Johnson-Desilvia's (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) missed shot and then made a layup to up the score 65-42. Pemberton made the next two second chance baskets back-to-back. Pemberton grabbed her own missed layup and then put the ball back up for a made basket. Her second was a made jump shot after she grabbed another offensive rebound.
The Valiants will travel to Riverdale, N.Y., on Wednesday, Jan. 22, to take on the College of Mount Saint Vincent at 6:00 p.m.
