Women’s Hockey Strikes Early, Remains Unbeaten in UCHC-play

UTICA, N.Y. — In their second of two-straight United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) road games, the Manhattanville College women's hockey team picked up a 3-0 win over Utica College. The Valiants remain undefeated in conference play after the Saturday, Jan. 25, victory.

Two first period goals put Manhattanville (10-5-3, 8-0-1 UCHC) into an advantageous position early in the game. The first goal came quickly, just three minutes into the game. Senior defender Ali Howard (Rye, N.Y./Rye) put the puck into the back of the net and junior forward Tianna Lopes (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) was credited with the assist. The second goal of the period came from senior forward Amanda Sabia (Freehold, N.J./The Gunnery). She recorded the goal thanks to an assist from Howard, who recorded her second point of the period.

The second period saw another early goal. Sabia once again found the back of the net and Lopes notched her second assist of the game. The goal-scoring came to a stop after the third Manhattanville goal. The rest of the second period and all of the third saw back and forth action from both teams, but Utica (6-11, 6-3 UCHC) still was unable to find the back of the net.

A strong performance from senior goalie Taylor Elias (Winnipeg, Man./Canadian International Hockey Academy) and an excellent power play and penalty kill was the story of the day for the Crimson and White. Elias made 33 saves and earned her third shutout of the season in a stellar performance. The Valiants converted 50% of their power play opportunities, going 2-4 on the day and also killed off all six of the Pioneers' power play chances. With the win, Manhattanville is now unbeaten in its last five games.

The Crimson and White return home next weekend for a big game against UCHC opponent Elmira College on Friday, Jan. 31. The team will look to keep its undefeated conference record alive against a tough opponent. Puck drop is set for 3:00 P.M. at the Playland Ice Casino in Rye, N.Y.
