Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Nicole Palombo, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications

Women’s Basketball Tops Old Westbury 75-54.

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team added another win to their record tonight against the College at Old Westbury. The Valiants trumped the Panthers 75-54 after the team shot 47.4% from the three-point line throughout night and 71.4% in the first quarter.

Two stand out plays the Valiants (16-2, 12-2) had in the first quarter incorporated freshman Jamie Smith (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) in both of them. The first was when junior Amanda Pemberton (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) had the ball at the top of the key when the Panthers (7-12,7-7) trailed 9-6. Instead of taking a three-pointer, Pemberton found Smith cutting under the basket and hit her for a layup. The next Smith involved play was when she was handed a pass at the foul line. Smith then caught sophomore Claudia Valentin (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin School) on a cut to the basket for a layup.

The Valiants shot 75.0% from the three-point line in the first half. Junior Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) and junior Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) combined for 6-8 and they each shot 75.0% from the three-range. By the end of the game Shore led the team in three's sinking five and shooting 62.5%. Coutu followed notching four and shooting 44.4%.

Defensively in the first half, Smith made three blocks. Although all three blocks were crucial her second led to a scoring opportunity. Panther's Micah Brown attempted the layup that Smith denied. Shore then grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball up the court to Pemberton for a layup.

Manhattanville went into the second half ahead by 23 points. Shore hit two three-pointers in the third and her second shot brought the score to 62-38. After Shore's basket Smith followed with the last layup of the third.

Manhattanville did not get a long point streak over the Panthers in the final quarter. The most unanswered points they scored was four once. The first time was in the opening minutes when Pemberton made a jump shot to keep the Valiants ahead by 22. That play was followed by freshman Madison Fields (Grantsville, Utah/Grantsville) making a steal and assisting sophomore Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) on a breakaway layup.

Coutu, Shore, Johnson-Desilvia and Pemberton each notched double-digits tonight. Coutu and Shore each scored 17 while Johnson-Desilvia was the next leading scorer with 15 and then Pemberton followed with 13. Additionally, Coutu led the team in rebounds for the first time all season. She grabbed four of her rebounds in the first quarter. Fields snagged two steals tonight, this was her first steal since Jan. 8 when she had two against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn.

The Valiants will next start a two game road campaign. First they will take on Yeshiva University this Saturday, Feb. 1 at 8:00 p.m. in New York. Following Saturday's matchup Manhattanville will then travel to Farmingdale State College on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
