Women’s Basketball Beats Purchase with 13 Different Scorers, 26 Assists and 17 Steals

PURCHASE, N.Y. – It was another victorious night in Kennedy Gymnasium as the Manhattanville College women's basketball team added another win to their record. They defeated Purchase College 83-29 today, Jan. 6.

It was a dynamic game with a ton of ball movement for the Valiants. There were 13 different points scorers, a total of 26 assists, 17 steals, and 35 points scored off the bench throughout tonight's game. Freshman London Scott (Farmers Branch, Texas/Newman Smith) had a season best notching a total of 10 points, eight rebounds and one block. She shot .667 from the field and 1.00 in free throws.

Eight of the Valiants' (9-1,5-1 Skyline) nine baskets scored in the first quarter were assisted, half of the assists were dished from junior Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East). When the score read 9-5, Purchase's (2-8,1-4 Skyline) Dejeana Peoples stepped up to take a three pointer but Coutu blocked the shot stopping the Panthers from inching their way to the lead. After Coutu blocked the shot freshman Madison Fields (Grantsville, Utah/Grantsville) grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball back up to Coutu. She then found junior Amanda Pemberton (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) ahead of her and dished the ball up to her for a layup. This shot brought the score to 11-4 in Manhattanville's favor.

The Crimson and White scored 13 points before the Panthers could respond as they opened up the second quarter. Pemberton opened up play for the Valiants but sophomore Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) quickly followed with a steal and then ran the ball down the court to make a fast break layup. Coutu notched four points after she sunk a three and made her granted foul shot after Amber Rodriguez fouled her. Coutu made another three after junior Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) stole the ball from the Panthers, passed it to sophomore Claudia Valentin (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin School) who found Coutu at the three-point line. Five steals were made this quarters and three of them were converted into baskets. Fields, Johnson-Desilvia and freshman Carmen Rosemond (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) were other players to notch steals in the second.

Johnson-Desilvia made another early steal in the third after her and Coutu trapped Rodriguez around half court. Johnson-Desilvia made the steal then passed it to Coutu who quickly gave the ball back to her. Johnson-Desilvia was then able to secure the layup. After that play it took three minutes for a point to get on the board. Fields broke the drought with a jumper after Shore pushed a defensive rebound her way.

Thirteen points tonight were scored off of fast breaks and four of them happened in the third. Valentin made a steal and dribbled the ball down herself to make a fast break layup and four points later Coutu made a steal and passed it to Valentin who was able to do it again.

Scott opened up the fourth quarter after getting a second chance basket. She missed her first layup, got the rebound and then scored off of it. The longest run the Valiants had in the final minutes was nine unanswered points. It started when freshman Lauren Krystall (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) nailed a three pointer assisted by Julia Torreso (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) and junior Karina Cruz (Kissimmee, Fla./Poinciana) followed with another three. Cruz answered her three by making a steal and then getting fouled. She was able to make both of her free throws to make the score 82-27. Rosemond scored the last point of the night after she was fouled and made one of her free throws.

Manhattanville will host another Skyline Conference matchup between St. Joseph's-Brooklyn this Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 7:00 p.m.
