RYE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's ice hockey team played to a 2-2 tie with United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) rival Lebanon Valley College on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 1, at Playland Ice Casino. Following a scoreless overtime to cement the draw, the two teams went to work on fighting for the point in the UCHC standings. Neither squad scored during the 3-on-3 second overtime period, but the visiting Flying Dutchmen were able to take the shootout 2-0.
The Valiants (7-11-2, 4-8-1 UCHC) started off the game slow and were outshot by Lebanon Valley (5-12-3, 3-7-3 UCHC) 10-5 in the first. In a rough period where the two teams combined for 10 total penalties, it was the Flying Dutchmen who eventually capitalized with a powerplay goal at 12:56 in to make it 1-0. The second period was a different story as the Crimson and White held a 14-8 shot advantage over the visitors. Unfortunately, LVC jumped ahead by two goals just over eight minutes into the period and put the Valiants in a deeper hole.
However, things finally started to shift the home squad's way when they drew a penalty to earn a man-advantage opportunity with 13:12 gone. Just under 30 seconds after the slashing call on LVC, Valiant senior assistant captain
Ken McLean (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) won the faceoff on the offensive zone back to his rookie winger
Mason Emoff (Collingwood, Ont./Bishop's College School). The freshman then cycled it back to senior co-captain
Ryan Jackson (Montreal, Que./Pomfret School) who ripped a shot on net that was padded aside. McLean jumped all over the rebound for his 10th powerplay goal of the season, which ranks him second in all of NCAA Division II/III.
Trailing by one midway through the third now, the Valiants found themselves with yet another man-advantage opportunity. The Flying Dutchmen were called for tripping with 7:54 gone in the period and 1:44 later, it was the rookie
Glynn Robitaille (Northville, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) who found the back of the net with a slap shot following a bit of back-and-forth passing at the top of the far circle with fellow first year
Noah Bradley (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township).
Neither squad was able to score again and to overtime the game went. The Valiants took three shots on goal but could not put the puck past the Lebanon Valley netminder. The game would officially end as a tie in the NCAA's eyes, but the two squads still had another UCHC point to play for, so up next was the 3-on-3 second overtime period, which was also scoreless. The shootout period that followed was won by the Flying Dutchmen 2-0 and the road squad picked up the extra point in the standings.
Manhattanville takes another six-day break before returning to action for some road UCHC play next weekend, Feb. 7-8. The Valiants first travel to Chatham University on Friday night in Pittsburgh, Pa., for a 7:10 p.m. puckdrop against the Cougars. Then they're on to Reisterstown, Md., for a meeting with No. 14 Stevenson University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The Crimson and White lead Chatham 5-0 all-time and hold a 4-3 advantage over the Mustangs.
