Women’s Basketball Falls Short to USMMA

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team ended its five game win streak as they fell to the United States Merchant Marine Academy today, Feb. 11. The Valiants had a higher shooting percentage than the Mariners but fell short 60-43.

The Valiants (19-3, 15-3 Skyline) totaled 10 offensive rebounds throughout the game and junior Amanda Pemberton (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) notched four of them. She totaled six second chance points out of the 10 the Valiants scored the entire game. Her first second chance basket came in the third when the Valiants trailed 39-25. She grabbed the offensive rebound and put up a layup to cut the Mariners (19-3, 16-2 Skyline) lead to 12.

The Crimson and White trailed USMMA by 10 before the end of the first half but cut the deficit to six within the first two minutes of the third. Sophomore Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) made a layup before the end of the second to trail Merchant Marine by eight. Freshman Jamie Smith (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) made a steal in the opening minutes of the third to assist Johnson-Desilvia on another layup to make the score 31-25.

Pemberton led the Valiants throughout the game in points and scored eight of her 17 in the fourth quarter. In the closing minutes, Pemberton scored two second chance baskets and made two rebounds. As Manhattanville was trying to rally a few more points towards the end, sophomore Claudia Valentin (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin School), junior Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton), Pemberton and Smith were the only Valiants to put up baskets.

Manhattanville will next play its rival down the road Purchase College this Friday, Feb. 14. The Battle of Anderson Hill Road will begin at 6:00 p.m. in Purchase, N.Y.
