NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team suffered the 18-6 loss to open the 2020 season on Saturday, Feb. 22, on the road at the United States Coast Guard Academy. Senior
Nick Delia (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) led the Valiants in goals (4) and shots on goal (8).
The Valiants (0-1) and Bears (1-1) stayed scoreless for the first three minutes and change before Coast Guard scored the first of the game at 11:43. The home team then scored a couple more before Delia – assisted by classmate
Ty Caccavo (Carlsbad, Calif./San Marcos) – got Manhattanville on the board to make it a 3-1 game with 5:39 remaining in the first quarter.
Unfortunately, the Bears rattled off the next two goals to end the first and started off the second with a pair as well before Delia scored his second of the game at 6:27 to make it 7-2. Coast Guard scored twice more in the final minute of the half to go in up 9-2 at the break. Senior goalie
Jason Frezza (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Portledge) started in the cage for the Valiants and made 11 saves in the first half in the loss.
The second half saw more of the same for the Valiants as Coast Guard scored another nine with junior
Mike McGrath (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) in net for the latter 30 minutes. He made nine stops in his first action of the season for Manhattanville. Down 12-2, senior
Will Duval (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay) scored his first of the year with 3:10 left in the third. Delia scored twice in the fourth, sandwiching sophomore
Nick Cornelia's (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) first goal of the year as well.
The Valiants return to action for their home-opener next Saturday, Feb. 29, at GoValiants.com Field. Marywood University comes to Purchase, N.Y., for a scheduled 12:00 p.m. start.
