Manhattanville Men's Soccer Scores Late to Upend St. Joseph's-Long Island

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's soccer team extended their wining streak to six games on Saturday, earning a 1-0 win at St. Joseph's-Long Island. With the victory, the Valiants improve to 8-4-2 overalls and 7-0-1 in matches against the Skyline Conference.

After scoring the game-winning goals in all three games last week, Eli Pardo (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) continued to come up clutch with the game's only score. The junior forward connected with his eighth goal of the season with a header off of Michael Mezzina's (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Morris Catholic) corner kick with four minutes remaining in regulation to lift the Valiants to victory in their final road game of the regular season.

Luis Granados (Pasadena, Calif./St. Francis) earned his sixth shutout of the season in the win, improving to 8-2-1 in his 11 starts as a keeper. The sophomore made two saves in the win, and has now allowed just one goal in his last 540 minutes to continue lowering his goals-against average this season to 0.53.

Offensive chances were hard to come by for both teams in the contest, with the Valiants and Golden Eagles combining for just five total shots on net. St. Joseph's would get the first opportunity of the day off a header by James Dacos six and a half minutes in which was stopped by Granados. It would take almost 15 minutes later before either team had another look when Pardo had his first shot of the affair blocked in the 20th minute. Demba Cham (Bronx, NY/World View High School), Mezzina, and Lucas Fernandez (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit) would each fire a shot off the mark before the end of the scoreless opening 45.

The Golden Eagles had an opportunity to break the draw six minutes into the second half when Justin Garcia's shot was blocked before Dacos fired a shot over the top crossbar. In the 75th minute, Pardo knocked a header towards the St. Joseph's goal that was stopped by Tyler Flaherty. The Golden Eagle goalkeeper would stop Pardo again in the 82nd minute, but the third time was the charm for the Manhattanville junior as he was able to knock Mezzina's corner in past Flaherty four minutes later.
