Manhattanville Volleyball Sweeps St. Joseph's-Brooklyn to Extend Winning Streak to Six

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College volleyball team extended their current winning streak to six straight matches on Monday night, picking up a 3-0 sweep at St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. With the 25-19, 25-22, 25-11 win, the Valiants continued their strong season, improving to 13-4 overall and 7-1 against Skyline Conference opponents.

Manhattanville used 37 kills from eight different players en route to the victory. Alejandra Figueroa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Rosa-Bell) led the team with her second-straight double figure effort, posting 10 kills. Emma Dronzek (Yonkers, N.Y./Sacred Heart) and Ayla Ruiz (Honolulu, HI/St Andrews Schools) contributed seven kills each, while Sofia Morales (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) added five to her stat line. Vianca Vital (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Perpetuo Socorro) was heavily involved in the offense as usual, collecting her tenth double-double of the year with 28 assists and 10 digs.

Defensively, Vital was second to only Grace Ballagas (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Robinson School) on the night in digs. The freshman libero had 19 digs in what was yet another standout performance. The rookie now has 290 digs on the year, continuing to lead the conference with 5.37 per set.

The Valiants and Bears battled to a 6-6 tie in the opening set before Manhattanville picked up four points on a SJC service error and three ensuing serves by Figueroa. The 10-6 lead was enough leg room for the Vals to work with, as they would hold the lead for the remainder of the frame, going on another four point streak shortly after to go ahead 16-8 and ultimately close out the set 25-19.

In the second set, Manhattanville carved out an early 7-3 advantage, but the Bears continued to hang around. The Valiants would pull ahead by as many as six, but with the Valiants leading 20-14, the Bears went on a five point run to cut the lead down to one, ultimately evening the score at 21-21. The Crimson and White hung tough, scoring four of the next five points to win the frame.

After the pair of back and forth sets, the Valiants made quick work in the deciding one, running out to a 9-1 lead. The Bears would only score twice while controlling the serve as Manhattanville continued to build upon the lead before taking the set and match by a 25-11 final.
