FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College volleyball team concluded their conference schedule on Thursday night, earning a 3-0 sweep of SUNY Old Westbury. With the 25-3, 25-9, 25-5 victory, the Valiants will end the 2021 season with a 10-1 record in the Skyline Conference, securing the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Skyline Conference Championship tournament.
Manhattanville improved to 16-6 on the season with their 13
th sweep of the year.
Vianca Vital (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Perpetuo Socorro) led the Crimson and White with a 30 assist night, her eighth outing of 30 or more helpers this year. The junior is now sitting at 1,512 assists for her career, just four shy of tying for the second-most in program history.
Vital's assists contributed heavily to a 43-kill night by the Valiants. Manhattanville had 10 different players end the night with a putaway, led by an eight kill effort by
Hannah Pena (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen).
Alejandra Figueroa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Rosa-Bell) added seven kills, while
Emma Dronzek (Yonkers, N.Y./Sacred Heart) and
Ayla Ruiz (Honolulu, HI/St Andrews Schools) had six kills each. Defensively, it was Figueroa leading the way with 10 digs. Vital added nine, while
Grace Ballagas (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Robinson School) pitched in with five.
The Valiants roared out to a 6-0 lead in the first set. Manhattanville held the Panthers to just three serves in the frame, ending the set on a 16-0 run to make an immediate statement to claim the first set. The Crimson and White would then use an eight-point run in the second set to jump out to a 10-2 lead that they didn't look back from, cruising to a 25-9 second set victory.
Manhattanville would once again snuff out all Old Westbury attack opportunities in the third, with the Panthers unable to record a point while in control of the serve. After the Valiants scored the first six points of the set, Manhattanville would collect the win on the back of a 15-3 run to close out the third frame.
