PURCHASE, N.Y. – Playing in front of a home crowd for the first time this season, the Manhattanville College women's basketball team picked up a 104-46 win over Five Towns College on Thursday night. The win ties a program record for most points in a single game as the Valiants improve to 2-0 on the young season.
15 of the 16 Valiants that stepped on the court recorded a point in the victory, with six players reaching double-figures.
Julia Torreso (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) led the way with a career-high 17 points, including a 3-for-5 line from beyond the arc.
Claudia Valentin (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin School) had 16 points to go along with seven steals, while
Niyona Smith (Towson, MD/Concordia Prep) shot 7-of-12 from the field for 15 points.
Azurae Taylor (Orlando, Fla./Windermere) added 12, while
Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) and
Kristen Scrobola (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas High School) had 10 points each.
The Valiants dominated play on the boards, outrebounding the Sound 52-34. Much like the scoring, almost everyone got involved in the rebound effort as 15 different Valiants ended the night with a board.
Ali Mikaele (Silver Spring, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal School) led the way with eight, including four offensive rebounds, while Torreso had six of her own.
With the score tied 4-4 in the early going, Manhattanville went on a 9-0 run to claim a lead they never looked back from. After the Sound cut the home lead down to five, the Valiants ended the first quarter on a 21-0 run to claim a 34-8 advantage.
The large deficit just 10 minutes into the contest was too much for Five Towns to fight back from as the Valiants kept extending their lead. The Crimson and White shot 47 percent from the field in the second quarter while outscoring the Sound 20-6 to take a 54-14 lead into the locker room at the half.
Manhattanville continued to be in control through the second half, outscoring Five Towns 50- 32 over the final 20 minutes. The Valiants used 71 points off the bench to roll to victory, while the defense recorded 25 total steals from 12 different players to effectively shut down the Five Towns offense.
