PURCHASE, N.Y. – Eclipsing the century mark in points for the first time since December of 2018, the Manhattanville College men's basketball team defeated City College of New York by a final of 101-85. With the victory, the Valiants are 2-0 to begin the fresh season.
The Valiants had six scorers reach double figures in the contest, led by 16 from
Petey Galgano (New Rochelle, N.Y./Wilbraham & Monson Academy (Mass.)).
Tommy Lotito (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) and
Connor Yetman (Sydney, Australia/The Scots College (H.S.)) scored 13 apiece, while
Chris Brown (Miami, Fla./Coral Gables Senior) has a 12-point outing.
Jake Dunn (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) and
Matt Bielenda (Wethersfield, Conn./Xavier) rounded out the top scorers with 11 points each.
Manhattanville outrebounded the visiting Beavers, 45-42. Four Valiants—Galgano, Lotito, Yetman, and Brown—tied for the team lead with six boards each. Yetman pulled in three offensive boards, the most in the game alongside Bielenda.
In addition to his scoring and rebound total, Lotito helped get the Valiants offense rolling with eight assists.
Manhattanville got off to a hot start as
Jake Dunn (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) sank his first two shots, both from beyond the arc, to spot the home team an early 6-0 lead. The Beavers would hang around within five points for much of the early going before the Valiants went on a 12-2 run halfway through the period to claim a 30-17 advantage. Manhattanville would lead by as many as 17, but the Beavers would end the half on an extended 17-5 run to send the teams into the locker room with the Valiants nursing a six point lead, 42-36.
After trading baskets to open up the half, the Valiants reclaimed their double-digit lead with a 10-0 run with five points from both Galgano and Yetman to go up 57-40. CCNY would once again begin to march back with eight unanswered points of their own, but an 11-0 Valiant run put Manhattanville ahead by 20 with 13:30 left to play. The Crimson and White would lead by as many as 22 over the final eight minutes, closing out the night with a 101-85 victory.
