Strong First Half Not Enough as Manhattanville Men's Basketball Falls at No. 2 Yeshiva

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Despite holding a 12-point lead in the first, the Manhattanville College men's basketball team was unable to overcome a record-setting day by Ryan Turell as the Valiants fell on the road to No. 2 Yeshiva, 78-56. The loss drops Manhattanville to 3-3 on the year as the Crimson and White begin Skyline Conference play 0-1.

Turell scored 51 points for the hosting Maccabees, setting a new single-game program record. While the Valiants were able to hold the senior and the rest of the Yeshiva offense relatively in check for the opening 20 minutes, the Macs used 63 percent shooting from the field in the second half to erase Manhattanville's lead and run out to the 22 point victory
.
The Valiants were led offensively by Tommy Lotito's (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) 13-point effort. The junior played 29 minutes off the bench and shot .500 on the day while also dishing out five assists. Jake Dunn (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) and Connor Yetman (Sydney, Australia/The Scots College (H.S.)) scored nine each.

Lotito and Yetman were also the team's leading rebounders, joining Chris Brown (Miami, Fla./Coral Gables Senior) with four boards throughout the game. The Valiants were limited to just two offensive rebounds, their lowest total in a game this season.

The first half was a very back-and-forth affair, with the two squads matching each other shot for shot through the opening six minutes. After four separate tied scores, Manhattanville was able to take their first lead of the day on a Mike Granda (Monroe Township, N.J./St. Joseph) three pointer. Ryan Giordano (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) hit a jumper to put the Vals up by three, but two quick Yeshiva baskets swung the lead back the other way. The Valiants responded with a 13-2 run, claiming a 28-16 lead with five minutes to play in the half. While the Maccabees were able to cut the lead down to six at the end of the stanza, the Valiants were able to hold one of the top teams in the nation to 26 first half points.

Yeshiva did show why they hold the No. 2 ranking in DIII, coming out in the second half strong as Turell took over. The Valiant lead slowly dissipated over the opening five minutes, as the Macs went on an 11-6 run to pull within one. Turell connected on a deep ball to put Yeshiva back in front 40-38 with 15 minutes left to play and would never look back. The deep ball started a string of 11 unanswered points for the Maccabees, pulling ahead by 10. The Valiants would cut the lead in half after Lotito's three made the score 48-43, but Yeshiva responded with an 11-2 run and would lead the rest of the way by double figures.
