Baseball concludes 2021 season with split at Mount Saint Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College baseball team wrapped up the 2021 season with a non-conference road split against the Mount Saint Mary College Knights (12-11) Saturday afternoon from MSMC Baseball/Softball Complex in Newburgh, New York. The Knights claimed the 6-5 win in eight innings in the opener before the Valiants captured the 7-3 victory in the finale. Making the conference tournament back in 2019, Manhattanville will miss out on postseason play after posting a 12-11 overall record and finishing 9-7 for a fifth-place finish in league standings.

  • Manhattanville opened up the scoring in the first inning with two runs scored off Knight starter Anthony Caminitti. With one out on the board and the bases loaded, Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) induced a walk for Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) to score the game's initial run. Luke Tebolt (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) followed with a sacrifice fly out to left to push across Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and double the Valiants' advantage, 2-0.
  • The Valiants took a five-run lead after putting together a three-run second highlighted by Anthony Quatrochi's (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) RBI-double and later scoring off a Shaffer sacrifice flyout, 5-0.
  • Valiant starter TJ Brescia (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) tossed a four-inning no-hit bid until Leone broke through with a two-out double in the fifth inning. Donte Iodice hit a single to Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) to push across Nicholas Torres for the Knights first run of the game. Steven Mirra followed by earning a walk before Brescia fired his ninth strikeout of the day and conclude his outing.
  • The Knights pulled within one run in the sixth after scoring three runs on Valiant reliever Sean Demo (Bloomfield, N.J./St. Peter's Prep). Iodice capped Demo's day with a two-RBI single to make it a 5-4 game. Mount Saint Mary pushed the game into extras by tying game at five in the seventh off reliever Matthew Messina (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle). With the bases juiced, Cullen Roper advanced 90 feet following Torres groundout sending five-all game into the eighth.
  • Manhattanville was unable to capitalize in the eighth as the team strand Mike Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) at second base. With Leone sitting on second base, Maldonado hit a one-out walk-off single off Messina to settle the 6-5 final in eight innings.

  • Mount Saint Mary struck first to open the game two scoring with one run scored on Valiant starter Tommy Iazzetta (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake). With two-outs on the board, Barnes slapped a double to right center to plate Mirra for the game's initial run.
  • Manhattanville responded quickly with a five-run second on Knight starter Joe Stewart. Lynch broke through with a two-out single to push across Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) and Greg Lucien Jr. (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) for the Valiants 2-1 lead. Lynch advanced home after taking advantage of a passed ball to make it a 3-1 game. With the bases loaded, Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) earned a RBI walk for Anthony Pressimone (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) to score the game-winning run before Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) capped the second inning scoring capitalizing off Stewart's wild pitch.
  • The Knights pulled within three runs in the home half of the fourth courtesy of Robert Brust's RBI double, 5-2.
  • The Valiants padded its lead by scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh frames highlighted by Jaden Colon's (New Rochelle, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) run-scoring double to make it a 7-2 game.
  • Mount Saint Mary scored their third run in the seventh inning as Crowley touched home plate off a passed ball. Ryan Powers (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) fired his third strikeout for the final out to settle the 7-3 final.
