NEW YORK, N.Y. – Manhattanville College volleyball kept up their winning ways on Thursday night, sweeping John Jay for the team's sixth straight win. With the win (25-22, 25-12, 25-13), the Valiants improve to 6-1 in the 2021 campaign.
Alejandra Figueroa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Rosa-Bell) led the Valiants with a season-high 15 kills.
Sofia Morales (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) matched her season-best effort with seven putaways, while
Meghan Wildes (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) rounded out Manhattanville's top attackers with five kills in her season debut. As she has done all season long,
Vianca Vital (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Perpetuo Socorro) was heavily involved in setting up Manhattanville's attack attempts with 23 assists. The junior is now averaging 9.0 assists per set, leading the Skyline Conference. Defensively, reigning Skyline Libero of the Week
Grace Ballagas (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Robinson School) contributed 14 digs to lead the team, brining her to an even 5.0 digs per set, another leading mark in the conference.
A pair of four point runs gave John Jay an 18-15 lead in the first set, prompting Manhattanville to call a timeout to reassess. While the Bloodhounds would extend their lead to 22-18, the Valiants would capitalize on a service error and rattle off seven straight points to complete the comeback, 25-22.
The first set momentum carried Manhattanville through the rest of the match, as the Valiants used a seven and an eight point run to make short work of the second set, 25-12. While John Jay was able to negate the sustained Valiant runs in the third set, Manhattanville held the Bloodhounds to just three points on their serves. Limiting the Bloodhounds' chances to get things going on the attack, Manhattanville closed out the contest with their sixth-straight 3-0 win.
