Women's Hockey Scores Nine to Complete Sweep of Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Seven different scorers netting nine unanswered goals led the Manhattanville College women's hockey team to a weekend series sweep of Wilkes on Saturday afternoon. The 9-1 victory moves the Valiants' record to 9-4-1 overall and 9-1-0 in conference play against the UCHC.

When all was said and done, 11 different skaters combined for 21 total points on nine goals and 12 assists, setting new season highs in both points and shots with 62. Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy) led the offensive eruption with four points on two goals and a pair of assists. Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School) also lit the lamp twice while Tia Martignetti (Wilmington, Mass./Boston Junior Eagles (EHF)) had a game-high three assists and Annie Niedermier (Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) supplied two helpers of her own.

Ana Tittmann (Salisbury, Conn./Housatonic Valley Regional) had the honor of firing the opening salvo, finishing Niedermier's feed at 6:27 in the first. Nine and a half minutes later, Carr netted her first of the night off of assists from Taylor Ham (Saugerties, N.Y./Millbrook School) and Tittmann in what would be the first of three Valiant power play goals in the affair.

Just 83 seconds into the second, Ham got herself into the goal column with a shot off a Fjolla Berisha (Mahopac, N.Y./Brewster Lady Bulldogs (NEGHL)) pass. Miller got in on the fun at the 8:15 mark with Martignetti's first assist of the afternoon.

With a four goal lead to begin the third period, the Valiants shifted into high gear with five more scores in the final 20 minutes. The attack began 62 seconds into the period with Laney Nash (Edmonds, Wash./Washington Wild (PNAHA)) capitalizing on a power play opportunity and finishing Miller's assist. A minute and a half later, Miller netted her second of the contest, set up by Martignetti. The tandem would remain involved in the offense for the team's seventh goal, as both picked up an assist on Berisha's power play goal at 6:18 in the third.

It took just 29 more seconds for Manhattanville to score once again, this time off the stick of Ava Panzer (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling). The junior defender picked up her first collegiate goal after getting a feed from Hannah Beckman (North Plainfield, N.J./Rice Memorial Prep (Vt.)). Finally, it was Carr striking once again at 12:36 to conclude the scoring frenzy, notching her second of the day from Niedermier and Charlotte Stanwood (West Vancouver, B.C./Penticton Secondary).

Wilkes would get one of their own before the final horn sounded, as Kendall Castro capitalized on a power play with 1:48 remaining in the contest. The power play goal was the lone blemish on netminder Jewells Austin's (Bethlehem, CT/Nonnewaug High School) line for the day, as the first year netminder was able to keep the Colonels in check for a second straight night. Austin made 14 saves in the win, lowering her goals-against average to 1.46 on the season. She ends the weekend with 27 saves and a pair of wins.

Manhattanville dominated the faceoff circle, winning 40 draws to Wilkes' 23. Miller went 14-5 in her draws, while Niedermier and Grace Felicio (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) won 12 and 11 draws respectively. Manhattanville was extremely effective on its power play chances, going 3-for-5 with the skater advantage. On the other side of the ice, the Valiants killed off four of the five Wilkes' power plays.
