PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Kicking off a three-game week, the Manhattanville College women's basketball team completed a regular season sweep of St. Joseph's (Long Island) on Tuesday night, defeating the Golden Eagles 66-60. The Valiants improve to 11-2 on the season, 7-1 against the Skyline Conference, and 2-0 in 2022.
Playing a full 40 minutes,
Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) set a new career high with 24 points. The graduate student guard was 7-for-15 from the field, going 4-for-9 from beyond the arc. Shore also collected five rebounds and added a block and an assist.
Claudia Valentin (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin School) earned her first double-double of the year with 18 points and 10 boards, both season-highs for the senior.
Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) added 11, now scoring double figures for the ninth time in her last ten games, while both
Ali Mikaele (Silver Spring, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal School) and
Kristen Scrobola (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas High School) ended the night with six rebounds.
In what was a much closer contest than the meeting back in November, an 88-56 victory for the Valiants, Manhattanville never trailed on Tuesday but also couldn't find the sustained run to put the Golden Eagles away. Shore connected on three deep balls in the first quarter as Manhattanville built out a 19-8 lead, but the Golden Eagles scored six unanswered points over the final 70 seconds of the frame to cut Manhattanville's lead down to five.
While the three ball did not fall for the Valiants in the second quarter with the team going 0-for-5 from beyond the arc, St. Joseph's shot just 18 percent in the quarter to allow the Valiants to gain some distance. With the score 22-18, Manhattanville went on an 8-0 run to go back ahead by double digits. Alyssa Adomaites would hit a jumper in the final seconds for the home team to send the Vals into the locker room up 10.
The lead would hold around that ten point margin for most of the third period before the Golden Eagles went on an extended run. With Manhattanville up 42-28 with 6:13 left in the quarter, St. Joseph's went on an 11-0 run to make it a one possession game again for the first time since the first. Three would be as close as the Golden Eagles would get in the period, as Manhattanville ended the quarter on a mini 5-2 run to go back ahead by six entering the final 10 minutes of play.
The Valiants would regain their double-digit lead three minutes into the fourth, ultimately going up by 12 with 3:55 left in the game. The Golden Eagles had one last surge in them, using a 14-4 run capped off by an Adomaites three to pull within two with 21 seconds to go. Remaining cool under pressure, Shore capped off her phenomenal night by hitting all four free throws after the Golden Eagles were forced to foul to close out the night and send the Valiants home with a win.
