PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's basketball team had their three game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday night, dropping a nailbiter to Farmingdale State, 63-62. The Valiants fall to 7-7 on the season with the loss, and are now 4-3 in the Skyline Conference.
Chris Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount Saint Michael Academy) was sent to the free throw line with two seconds left on the clock, drawing a foul on his last-chance layup attempt. The senior guard sunk the first, but after a Farmingdale timeout, he couldn't connect on the second with the Rams recovering the loose ball escape with the win.
Tommy Lotito (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) was the offensive leader for a second straight game, scoring 17 to make it nine-straight in double figures for the junior guard. Lotito also dished out three assists and a pair of steals.
Jake Dunn (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) finished second on the home squad with 10 points on a .400 shooting night.
For the second time in three games,
Petey Galgano (New Rochelle, N.Y./Wilbraham & Monson Academy (Mass.)) posted 11 rebounds to lead the Valiants off the glass. The senior guard also dished out a team-high six assists. The trio of Dunn,
Jackson Leech (Chicago, Ill./Von Steuben), and
Ryan Giordano (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) ended the night with four rebounds each.
A back-and-forth first half saw a 31-31 deadlock through the opening 20 minutes. The score would be tied six separate times during the first, with the lead never eclipsing six points for either side. A 12-2 Valiant run gave the home team the 23-17 lead with five minutes to play. The Rams responded with a 12-4 run of their own right to go back on top two and a half minutes later. Lotito would represent the final points of the half, sinking a jumper with 39 seconds left to even the score at 31 apiece.
Foul trouble would hinder the Valiants in the second half, as Manhattanville drew nine in the closing 20 compared to three appointed to the Rams. The Crimson and White would be saddled with all of their fouls of the half before one would be called on the opposition. The trips to the line and offensive turnovers allowed Farmingdale to erase a 10-point Valiant lead, evening the score at 51-51 with 7:25 remaining. The Rams would go ahead by seven with 2:50 to play, which the Valiants were able to come back from with a Maestre layup with 39 seconds left on the clock. Farmingdale's Dominique Senat was able to covert his layup attempt with nine seconds to go, setting up the final shot attempt and potential tying free throws for Maestre the other way.
