Women's Basketball Gets Back Into Win Column with 19 Point Victory Over Yeshiva

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Playing its lone neutral site contest of the regular season, the Manhattanville College women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 75-56 win over Yeshiva in a game hosted at the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Sunday afternoon. The Valiants improve to 12-5 with the win and are now 8-4 in Skyline Conference play.

The 75 points was Manhattanville's best offensive production in eight games since scoring 88 on Dec. 4 against Purchase. The Valiants were led by a pair of double-doubles from Niyona Smith (Towson, MD/Concordia Prep) and Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead). The rookie Smith scored 21 with 13 rebounds, eclipsing the 20 point plateau for the first time since she scored 23 against St. Joseph's (Long Island) on Nov. 20. Johnson-Desilvia scored 17 while matching Smith's rebound total.

Claudia Valentin (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin School) ended the contest third in scoring with seven points for the Valiants, while Jamison Agostinio scored six, accounting for Manhattanville's only three pointers on the day. Ali Mikaele (Silver Spring, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal School) had seven rebounds for the Crimson and White while dishing out a team-high four assists.

Manhattanville outscored Yeshiva in each of the four quarters, building out to a 37-22 lead at the end of the first half. It was a slow start for the Valiants, with the Macs claiming a 6-2 lead to open up the game, but an 8-0 run courtesy of four points from each of Johnson-Desilvia and Smith to give Manhattanville the lead.

The Maccabees pulled back to within one in the second quarter after a Shai Rahamim three pointer at 5:31. With Yeshiva breathing down their necks, Manhattanville regained distance with a 12-2 run, pulling ahead 30-19. The Valiants would score seven unanswered points in the final minute of the half, capped off by a Valentin layup to send Manhattanville to the locker room up 37-22.

The Valiants shot 43 percent over the final 20 minutes to close out the win. Manhattanville went up by 20 with 3:17 in the third, and led by as much as 25 in the fourth. Yeshiva would outscored the Valiants 13-7 over the final five minutes of play, but Manhattanville's lead was too significant to make a dent in with the remaining time.
