SCRANTON, Pa. – The 2022 Manhattanville College field hockey season concluded on Saturday afternoon as the sixth-seeded Valiants were defeated by No. 3 Marywood in the opening round of the Atlantic East Conference Championship. With the 3-2 loss, the Valiants will conclude the season with a 4-12 overall record.
The Valiants received a pair of goals from
Megan Keaveney (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South), but a fourth quarter Pacer tally was the difference maker to propel Marywood into the tournament semifinals.
Manhattanville found themselves in an uphill battle early, as Marywood scored twice in the opening 10 minutes. Jordan Saybe opened up the scoring in the second minute on a chance that was generated from a penalty corner. Seven minutes later, Emma Wagner doubled the home team's lead with a one-timer off an assist by Grace Lepage.
With the two early scores, it seemed the postseason matchup was going to follow in suit of the Oct. 22 meeting between the two teams that saw Marywood earn a 5-0 victory in Purchase. However, the Valiants had other plans as the defensive unit stood tall.
Florence Harrison (Melbourne, Australia/Balwyn High School) got the start in net and made nine saves, including five in the second quarter, to keep Manhattanville in the game.
With the score holding at 2-0 in the second quarter, Keaevney got the Valiants on the board with her fourth goal of the year, deflecting in a shot by
Abbey Playle (Reading, England/Leigh High School) in the 20
th minute. The helper would be the senior Playle's ninth of the season.
A scoreless third quarter set the stage for an exciting final 15 minutes with the Pacers protecting a one goal lead. Marywood logged five shots in the final quarter, with the biggest coming 1:11 into the period. Brianna Sumner was able to deflect a Lauren Youngken shot in past Harrison, reestablishing the two goal advantage for Marywood. Keaveney was able to strike again on another assist by Playle with 4:25 left in the game, but the Valiants would be unable to get another shot off in regulation as the Pacers held on for the 3-2 win.
In all, Marywood outshot Manhattanville 22-5, although the Valiants were able to put 0 percent of their shots on net. Beyond Keaveney's two goals, Playle and
Alyssa Monahan (East Fishkill, NY/John Jay High School) accounted for Manhattanville's other on-target shots, while
Felicity Williams (Glen Falls, N.Y./Glen Falls) ended the day with a shot as well. The Pacers earned nine penalty corners compared to the two for the Valiants.
