PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team closed out the regular season on Saturday afternoon, defeating John Jay in a 3-0 Senior Day sweep. The Valiants will carry a 21-6 regular season record into the Skyline Conference Championship tournament, beginning next week.
Prior to opening serve, the Valiants honored their five graduating seniors:
Felicity Hoffert (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East),
Katelyn Kamei (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Andrew's Schools - The Priory),
Hannah Pena (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen),
Caylee Premoli (White Plains, N.Y./School of the Holy Child) and
Vianca Vital (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Perpetuo Socorro). The five members of the Class of 2023, all contributors to the 2019 Skyline Championship team, were accompanied onto the court by family members in celebration of their efforts to Manhattanville Volleyball.
Fittingly, it would be the seniors leading the way in the win (25-9, 25-10, 25-15). Hoffert's 12 kills took point for the Valiants, while Pena and
Alejandra Figueroa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Rosa-Bell) notched six kills apiece. Entering the day with the second-most assists in program history, Vital accounted for 25 of the team's 32 helpers. Figueroa would lead the defensive effort with 14 digs, while Vital notched a double-double with her 11 digs.
Grace Ballagas (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Robinson School), meanwhile, added nine.
The Valiants served seven aces in the match, with Kamei, Ballagas and Vital finishing with two each. Pena had a strong performance at the net with four total blocks, three assisted and one solo.
Leading 5-3 to begin the first set, the Valiants went on an 11-1 run to blow the frame wide open with a 16-4 advantage. The Bloodhounds' longest run of the set would be just three points as the Valiants had just one attacking error to the tune of a .409 attack percentage. Manhattanville would remain in control for the duration of the frame, ending on a 3-0 run to take the opener 25-9.
The Valiant momentum carried over into the second set, with Manhattanville scoring eight of the first nine points. John Jay scored just twice while in control of the serve as the Valiants continued to build separation, adding to their lead. A 5-0 Valiant run put the home team up 19-8 before the home team closed out the frame on a 6-1 string to go up two sets, 25-10.
While John Jay would score the opening three points of the third set, a 6-0 Valiant run put Manhattanville back on top and in control of the match. The Bloodhounds would have just two multi-point runs in the remainder of the match, with the last being a 4-0 run with the Valiants on match point. While the Bloodhounds would cut the lead down to 24-15, a service error brought an end to the day by giving the Valiants the 25-15 win.
