HERSHEY, Pa. – The offensive showcase by the Manhattanville College women's hockey team continued on Friday night as the Valiants notched a 6-0 victory over Lebanon Valley College to improve to 3-0-0. Manhattanville outscored its opponents 25-0 through the opening three contests of the season.
Manhattanville got it done with five different goal scorers, led by a two goal night by
Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy).
Gabrielle Cox (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane High School), the reigning UCHC Player of the Week, followed up on her nine tallies across the opening two games against King's with another goal against the Dutchmen on Friday. She would be joined by
Virginia Birnie (Ontario, Canada/Rosethay Netherwood School),
Ava Panzer (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) and
Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) in the goal column as part of the series-opening win.
A three-goal first period tilted the ice early for the Valiants in the road matchup. Niedermier opened up the scoring with her second goal of the year, scoring from a feed by Birnie just under seven minutes into the affair. Panzer would notch her first of the season with 9:10 left in the period, assisted by
Ciara Dauer (Winchester, MA/Worcester Academy) and
Fjolla Berisha (Mahopac, N.Y./Brewster Lady Bulldogs (NEGHL)). After earning the helper on the opening tally, Birnie netted her first of the year 90 seconds after Panzer's score, burying a feed from Cox and
Lille Dougherty (Wakefield, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey School) to give the road team a three goal cushion.
Miller would get on the board as the lone goal scorer in the second period. The senior's unassisted tally made it goals in each of the first three games to open up the season as Miller was able to fire the puck past Shelby Guinard 12:01 into the period.
Speaking of players scoring in the first three games of the season, Cox continued her streak in the third period as her shorthanded goal off a pass from Miller put the Valiants up 5-0. The senior Cox has now scored a pair of shorthanded goals across the first three games of the season. Miller then closed out the night with her second score, this time netting a power play goal with 6:05 to go in the contest.
Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) stopped all 15 shots she faced in net, notching her second shutout of the season and the third by the Valiants' goalkeeping tandem. The senior made a game-high six stops in the first period.
Manhattanville had a 32-27 advantage in faceoffs, led by 12 wins by Niedermier. The Valiants were 1-for-4 on the power play with three total shots, while the PK unit successfully killed off all four Lebanon Valley advantages.
