BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Playing their final game before the Thanksgiving break, the Manhattanville College women's basketball team remained undefeated on the year with a 67-48 win at Sarah Lawrence. The Valiants improve to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Skyline Conference action.
Manhattanville was led offensively by
Angela Downey (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) who put together her best performance of her early Valiant tenure. The senior played 23 minutes off the bench, scoring 19 points on a 7-for-15 shooting night. Downey connect on three shots from beyond the arc and added four rebounds, a pair of assists and a block.
Julianna Kascic (North Bergen, N.J./Paramus Catholic), who had led the Valiant scoring in the team's last outing against Saint Joseph's-Brooklyn on Saturday, posted a double-double to help fuel the win. The senior forward dominated the glass for 22 rebounds, pulling down six offensive boards. Kascic added 13 points to her night, doing most of her damage at the free throw line with a 7-of-8 effort from the charity stripe. She would also finish with a team-high five assists.
Kristen Scrobola (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas High School) also had a strong rebounding night, collecting four offensive and defensive rebounds apiece. The junior contributed six of the team's 13 steals on the night.
Despite the Valiants opening the game on a 7-0 run with three pointers from
Livi Correia (North Attleboro, Mass./Worcester Academy) and Downey, the host Gryphons were able to hang around in the first quarter. A pair of Kaila Dorch free throws made it a one possession game again with 2:47 left. Kascic hit a jumper to reestablish the five point lead, but a 7-2 run tied the game up at 13-13 with 17 ticks remaining in the quarter. A Scrobola layup and one put the Valiants ahead once again before Kendall Haymore hit a pair of free throws for Sarah Lawrence to cut the lead down to one at 16-15 at the end of the quarter.
Manhattanville shot just 17 percent in the second quarter but were able to overcome the cold shooting and extend their lead by holding the Gryphons to just six points. Haymore put Sarah Lawrence ahead for the first time on the night with the first basket of the frame before Correia hit a three ball to bring the lead back to Manhattanville. After Dorch tied the game at 19-19 with a layup,
Jamison Agostino (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) connected from deep to give the Valiants the lead they would protect the rest of the night. Demitra Loukopoulos hit a jumper with three minutes remaining to make it a one point game once again before the Valiants closed out the half with eight unanswered points. Kascic would account for six of the points on a layup and four free throws. At the halftime buzzer, the Valiants held a nine point lead, 30-21.
A Correia layup followed by back-to-back baskets from
Amanda Orlando (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) gave the Valiants their largest lead of the night to that point at 36-21. The Gryphons were able to cut the lead down to 11, but were unable to get back within single digits. With the Valiants up 46-33, a 6-0 Manhattanville run over the final 1:06 of the third had the guests up by 19 with 10 minutes to play.
The Valiants had their best shooting quarter in the fourth, hitting 50 percent of their shots including a perfect 2-for-2 from deep. Agostino would account for both threes in the quarter, draining both shots back-to-back to make the score 60-42 with less than five minutes to go. A three-point play by Downey with 1:55 remaining grew the Valiant lead to 20, with
Esther Ramos' (Queens, N.Y./Forest Hills) layup with 67 seconds left giving the team their largest advantage of the game at 67-45. Kumi Tamura accounted for the final basket of the night, hitting a three for Sarah Lawrence to close out the contest with a 19 point Valiant win.
