NEW LONDON, Conn. – A two-game Connecticut road trip concluded on Saturday night for the Manhattanville College men's hockey team as the Valiants were bested at Connecticut College 6-1. The loss drops the Valiants' record on the year to 4-4-0.
The Camels scored all six of their goals uninterrupted, using a two goal first period to put the visiting Valiants in a hole. Connecticut would add three tallies in the second before adding their sixth in the third. Connecticut's first period tallies were separated by just 19 seconds as John Russo opened the scoring at 3:25 before soon after being joined by Brett Moccia. Russo struck again in the second to cap off the three goal period for the home team, netting his second of the game after Rocco Testa-Basi and Lukas Uhler both lit the lamp earlier in the period.
Jake Hughes rounded out the scoring for Connecticut College 2:13 into the third to put the Camels up 6-0. Not wanting to go home empty handed,
AJ Bella (Norwalk, Conn./Connecticut Roughriders (EHL)) was able to finally get the Valiants on the board at the 7:32 mark in the final period, taking a pass from
James Gregory (Darien, Conn./Connecticut Roughriders (EHL)) to fire a shot past Cam Fernandez while on a power play. The score was Bella's team-leading seventh of the year, while Gregory notched his team-best eighth assist of the season.
The Valiant tally would be the last for either offensive unit as Fernandez turned away each of the 23 other shots he faced in the cage to preserve the Camels' 6-1 win. On the other side of the ice, it was a tough night for the Manhattanville goaltenders.
Tyler Roy (Brighton, MI/Neumann University) made the start, stopping 16 shots and allowing four goals before being spelled by
Sebastian Woods (Limehouse, Ontario, Canada/Utica Jr. Comets (NCDC)). The rookie netminder played the remaining 27:24 of the game, allowing a pair of goals while making 14 saves.
The Camels went 31-22 in the faceoff circle while outshooting the Valiants 36-24.
Jack McDonough (Westbrook, Ct./New Jersey 87s (EHL)) led Manhattanville's effort in the draws, winning six of his nine faceoff attempts. In addition to scoring the team's lone goal, Bella led the Valiants in shots with four, while
Connor Boyce (St. Albans, Vt./Connecticut RoughRiders (EHL)) and
Hayden Taylor (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Islanders Hockey Club (NCDC)) each added three.
Manhattanville was 1-for-3 on power plays, logging five shots across the three man advantages. The penalty kill unit was busy for Manhattanville, killing off four of Connecticut's five power plays. The Camels logged 11 shots on their 13:53 of ice time with an extra skater.
