Manhattanville Athletics Mourns the Loss of Abby Harris

12/31/2022 7:37:00 PM

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College Athletics family mourns the loss of former women's hockey player Abigail "Abby" Harris, who passed away on Thursday.

"Abby was a beloved member of our Valiant family with a limitless future," said Julene Caulfield, director of athletics and recreation at Manhattanville College. "She will always be remembered and deeply missed by the Valiant community--Once a Valiant, always a Valiant. The thoughts and prayers of the entire Athletic Department go out to the Harris family during this very difficult time."

Abby joined the Valiant family for the 2020-21 season, during which she competed on the ice with the women's hockey team. Her journey to Manhattanville was paved following her prowess in high school, where she helped Simsbury High School capture three-consecutive conference championships before raising the state championship in her senior year.

Abby made an immediate impact in the locker room and on the ice while with the Valiants.

"Abby's legacy within our program will never be forgotten," said Jennifer MacAskill, the head coach of the Manhattanville College women's hockey team. "She was a selfless teammate, a fiercely loyal friend and a light in the lives of everyone who had a chance to meet her. This loss is felt deeply by out players and alumni. Our hearts are with George and Lourdes Harris during this difficult time."

In the face of a cancer diagnosis, Abby continued to keep high spirits and travel the world with her family, cheer on her beloved Boston Bruins and lift the spirits of everyone fortunate enough to have crossed her path.

Abby is survived by her parents, George and Lourdes, her uncles and aunts, Tom and Sasha and Steve and Mary Ann, her cousins Oscar, Marin and Fran, her grandmother Barbara, her boyfriend Eric, and her "hanai" uncles Michael and Stacey.

A memorial service for Abby will be held on January 7th at 11:00 a.m. at First Church of Simsbury (689 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, Conn.). First Church will establish a hockey scholarship fund in Abby's name and honor. Donations can be made directly to First Church of Simsbury, with "Abby Harris" included in the memo.
