PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's basketball team played their final home game of 2022 on Wednesday night as the Valiants defeated Skyline Conference foe Maritime College, 59-48. The win, Manhattanville's first in conference play, improves the Valiants' record to 7-3.
Compared to the offensive showcase that was on full display in their 102-81 win earlier in the week, the Valiants was able to use effective shooting to emerge victorious in the Wednesday night matchup. Manhattanville shot 48 percent on the night while holding Maritime to just 48 points, the lowest offensive output by a Manhattanville opponent this season.
It was
Tommy Lotito (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) leading the offense with a 20 point performance. The senior played all but two minutes on the night, shooting 55 percent for his fourth game of 20 points or more this year. Lotito would also lead the Valiants in rebounds with nine.
Andrew Saint-Louis (Norwalk, Conn./Notre Dame Fairfield) was the only other Valiant to reach double figures, scoring a career-high 12 on his .500 night from the floor. The sophomore guard knocked down a pair of shots from beyond the arc as part of his offensive night.
Jake Dunn (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) finished behind Lotito in the board battle for the night with seven caroms, while
Jackson Leech (Chicago, Ill./Von Steuben) added six. The Valiants had just two offensive rebounds, both by Lotito, compared to the 13 pulled down by Maritime. Still, despite the Privateers dominating the offensive glass, the Valiants limited Maritime to just eight second chance points to limit the damage under the net.
It was a slow start to the night as it took 2:33 for either team to connect on a shot. It would Lotito striking first with a layup to put some points on the board, the first of seven straight for the senior guard. The Privateers would make their first basket with 14:19 left in the half on a Robbie Mitchell layup.
Maritime pulled within two as Ryan Donovan connected on both of his shots from the free throw line with 11:21 left. The Valiants responded to the pressure with a 9-0 run to give the home team their first double-digit lead of the night, going ahead 19-8 following Saint-Louis' layup. Maritime prevented the lead from getting any higher as they hung around, cutting the Manhattanville advantage down to five at the half, 28-23.
The Privateers would shoot 12 more field goals than the Valiants in the second half, but Maritime's .257 shooting percentage over the final 20 minutes prohibited the guests from fully coming back in this one. Donovan made it a one possession game out of the locker room with a jumper before Leech added back-to-back layups. Maritime would pull back within three but once again the Valiants were able to regain some separation, this time with a 6-0 run that made the score 38-29 in favor of Manhattanville. Another six unanswered points by the home team capped off by a
Ryan Giordano (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) jumper gave Manhattanville their largest lead of the contest of 14 points, 48-34. The Privateers managed to pull back within single digits four times before the end of the night, but the Valiant defense was able to prevent a sustained run to allow Manhattanville to notch the 59-48 win.
