PURCHASE, N.Y. – It was a super start for Sunday today with the Manhattanville College men's basketball team earning their second win in as many days, completing the home-and-home sweep of Sarah Lawrence with an 82-50 win. The Valiants have now won six straight dating back to Jan. 30 and have only lost once since Jan. 15.
After yesterday's well-rounded offensive effort,
Tommy Lotito (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's),
Mike Granda (Monroe Township, N.J./St. Joseph) and
Petey Galgano (New Rochelle, N.Y./Wilbraham & Monson Academy (Mass.)) led the way with a combined 38 points. Lotito, Manhattanville's leading scorer on the year, paved the way with a 16 point effort on a .636 shooting day. Granda put up 12 for a second consecutive day, while Galgano's 10 point outing rounded out the Valiant scorers in double figures.
The Valiants pulled in 36 rebounds in the win compared to the 41 by the Gryphons. Everyone got involved in the battle of the boards, as 16 of the 17 Valiants that saw action ended the day with at least one rebound. Galgano,
Jack Scanlon (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River High School) and
Connor Yetman (Sydney, Australia/The Scots College (H.S.)) each had four as the Valiants' leaders on the day.
Manhattanville shot 52 percent on the day to cruise to the win. The Valiants dished out 27 assists, their second-most helpers this season behind 28 against CCNY on Nov. 15. Manhattanville were also ballhawks with a season-high 16 steals. Yetman led the effort with three takeaways.
After trading opening three-pointers, Galgano's jumper at 17:37 om the first put the Valiants ahead with a lead they would never surrender. The advantage climbed up to 10 on a
Jake Dunn (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) layup on a fast break, putting the Vals ahead 20-10 with 12L34 to go in the half. A Peter Fathi three pointer cut the lead down to four with seven minutes to go, but six straight points by the Valiants reestablished the double-figure lead. Manhattanville would then close out the half on a 9-0 run over the final four minutes to head into the locker room up 42-25.
The Gryphons scored the first five points of the second half, but the 12 point advantage was as close as Sarah Lawrence would make it the rest of the way. Manhattanville responded with a 12-2 run to go up 54-32, with the lead ultimately reaching its apex at 36 with 4:19 left to go.
