PURCHASE, N.Y. – It was a Senior Day to remember for the Manhattanville College women's basketball team on Saturday, as the Valiants earned an 89-65 win over St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn). The Valiants end the regular season 18-7 overall and 14-6 in the Skyline Conference, fourth in the conference.
Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) hit five three pointers, setting the program's single-season record 63 on the year. She passes Taylor Wilson's previous record of 60 from the 2012-13 season, while Shore's career total moves to 192, the most by any Valiant ever.
Shore was honored alongside five other teammates—
Ali Mikaele (Silver Spring, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal School),
Claudia Valentin (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin School),
Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead),
Jenn Balzarini (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By The Sea), and Nicole Trapp—pregame as part of the team's Senior Day ceremony. Fittingly enough, it would be a game where the seniors led the way for the Crimson and White as the Valiants reached 18 wins for the third time in four seasons.
Mikaele and Shore each put up 22 points in the win. For Mikaele, it was a career-best performance in her final regular season game, shooitng 9-of-19 from the field. The 22 points from Shore was her second-highest in a single game, falling just short of her 24-point effort against St. Joseph's (Long Island) back in January. Shore shot 36 percent from deep, hitting five to become the program's all-time three-point leader.
Johnson-Desilvia scored 12, while Valentin added 10. Rookie
Niyona Smith (Towson, MD/Concordia Prep) also put up 10 while collecting 13 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the season. Shore ended the game with eight rebounds, while Johnson-Desilvia rounded out the top efforts with seven caroms. As a team, the Valiants had 60 rebounds, their second highest total on the year behind only the first matchup with the Bears this season where Manhattanville pulled down 64.
Despite the final score, it took the Valiants until the second half to really pull away. The Bears shot 31 percent from deep over the opening 20 minutes to keep pace with the Valiants. Manhattanville was able to put together an 8-0 run in the first quarter to jump ahead 21-8, but the Bears cut the lead down to 10 at the end of the quarter.
Momentum was on the Bears' side to open up the second quarter as St. Joseph's went on an 8-1 run over the opening four minutes, pulling back to within three. The Bears would eventually even the score up at 32-32 following a Kelly O'Donnell layup, as the St. Joseph's senior eclipsed the 2,000 career point total in the game and set the Bears' all-time scoring record. The Valiants hung tough despite their lead evaporating, ending the half on a 9-4 run to reclaim the lead.
Manhattanville came out of the locker room with adjustments, shooting 42 percent the rest of the way home and hitting nine of their ten free throw attempts. While St. Joseph's scored four quick points to pull back to within one, the Valiants responded with a 12-1 run, going back up by double-digits and never looking back. The lead briefly dipped to eight, but Manhattanville scored seven unanswered points to go back up 62-47 and enter the final ten with a 65-50 advantage.
The Valiants closed out the contest with a 14-4 run, with their lead reaching its apex at 26 points. With the emphatic win, Manhattanville will now gear up for Tuesday's opening round of the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament.
