KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The host Mariners shot 60 percent from deep and connected on all 15 of their free throw attempts to earn a win over the Manhattanville College women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon. The 63-46 loss brings an end to the Valiants' two-game winning streak, as the Crimson and White drop to 13-6 on the year and 9-5 in the Skyline Conference, splitting the regular-season series with USMMA.
The Valiants were led offensively by a combined 24 points off the bench from
Jamison Agostino (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and
Niyona Smith (Towson, MD/Concordia Prep). The 14 from the sophomore Agostino marked her highest scoring output since putting up 15 at St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) on Jan. 15, sinking a career-high four three pointers in the contest. The rookie Smith added 10, now reaching double figures for the second time in three games.
While
Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) was held in check offensively with six points, the graduate guard collected 10 rebounds to lead the Valiants and tie her career high.
Ali Mikaele (Silver Spring, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal School) finished second in boards for the Valians on the day with five.
A 10-0 run by USMMA out of the gates set the tone for how the day would play out, as the Valiants were unable to ever pull the score back to even. Manhattanville cut the lead down to six, with Mikaele hitting a pair of baskets to represent the final four points of the opening quarter to push the score 18-12 in favor of USMMA. The two teams matched each other blow-for-blow through most of the second, as Manhattanville was able to keep the Mariners within striking distance at a five point lead.
USMMA hit a pair of Julia Dahlke free throws and a Kaira Winston layup to go back up nine, but Smith hit a floater of her own in the closing seconds to make the score at the half 32-25.
The Valiants hung around in the third, with a Shore three pointer at 5:20 making it a one possession game against at 39-36. However, the Mariners responded with an 11-2 run to go up by 12 at the end of the third. Manhattanville was unable to cut the lead back below 13, as USMMA outscored the guests 13-8 over the final 10 minutes.
