Baseball Defeats Baruch 4-1 in Season Debut at Manhattanville Field

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Making the team's official home debut for the season on their own diamond, the Manhattanville College baseball team defeated Baruch on Friday afternoon by a final of 4-1. With the win, the Valiants improve to 5-2 on the season.

Ray White (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) earned his second win of the season with a quality start, tossing five innings and allowing just one run on three hits and two walks while striking out a pair. The bullpen handled the rest of the job as Joseph Lacoparra (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), Alby Ciuffetelli (Mahopac, N.Y./Yorktown) and Myles Durney (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) combined for four shutout innings. Lacoparra struck out three in his inning of work, while Durney picked up his first career save with a scoreless ninth.

The Valiant runs were mostly produced via unorthodox means, as Baruch committed six errors in the field. The Bearcats scored in the first inning, but the Valiants were able to respond in the second. With one away, Joe McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) hit a grounder to short. The throw to first was wide, allowing the freshman to advance to second. In the next at-bat, McDonald stole third and the throw from the Baruch catcher was off target, allowing him to score the tying run. Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) and Anthony Caputo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) would hit back-to-back doubles later in the inning to plate the go-ahead run, a lead Manhattanville held the rest of the way.

In the fourth, a pair of Bearcat errors put runners on second and third for the Valiants. Tyler Viscusi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) flied one out to center, prompting Frank Delgado (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) to tag on the throw. The relay caromed off McDonald standing on second, allowing Delgado to reach home plate safely.

The Valiants would get one more in the seventh as Caputo and Bornkamp ran a double steal. The base nabs came on a wild pitch and with the ball still loose behind home plate, Bornkamp took the extra base, slid under the tag by Benjamin Akerman and scored the fourth run of the day for the Valiants.

Ciuffetelli was the long man out of the pen on Friday, tossing two scoreless innings in relief. After a pair of hits and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Baruch with two away, the senior was able to strike out Natanael Castillo to leave the runners stranded in the top of the eighth. Durney slammed the door in the ninth, striking out a pair to secure the win for the Valiants.
