NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – In a game that was tied entering the fourth quarter, New Paltz scored the only goal of the final 15 minutes to defeat the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team on Wednesday evening by a final score of 10-9. The tough loss drops the Valiants to 1-5 on the season, while New Platz earns its first win of the year.
Jesse McGrath (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) scored four goals for the Valiants, his second multigoal game of the season since scoring five in the season opener against Albright.
Patrick Magliocchino (Thornwood, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) scored twice while also dishing out a pair of assists.
Kevin Rafferty (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) led Manhattanville with six ground balls and two caused turnovers. Magliocchino and
Melchi Agyapong (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) both collected four ground balls themselves.
With just over two minutes gone from the opening faceoff, McGrath scored his seventh goal of the season courtesy of Magliocchino's assist. The lead held for the Valiants until 8:50 left int eh quarter when the Hawks scored a pair of goals just 22 seconds apart. Manhattanville would tie the game up at 2-2 before the end of the opening quarter after
Harrison Yoguez (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph) netted his third goal of the season.
After New Paltz scored right off the bat to begin the second quarter, the Valiants responded with four straight goals to go ahead 6-3, the largest lead of the night for either team. Magliocchino scored both of his goals to sandwich the run, scoring his first assisted by McGrath with 13:57 left in the half before scoring his second off a
Harrison Yoguez (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph) assist with 4:41 left.
Matt Schneider (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and McGrath were able to score unassisted tallies between Magliocchino's scores to help extend the Valiant lead. New Paltz came back with a pair of their own, but
Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains), the Valiants' leading scorer on the year, netted his 15
th goal of the season with 3:05 to play to give Manhattanville a 7-5 lead at halftime.
In a six-goal third quarter, New Paltz brought the score back to even with a pair of goals in the opening five minutes. McGrath put Manhattanville back on top while completing the hatty on Magliocchino's second assist with 7:38 to go into the stanza while New Paltz found the equalizer once again 17 seconds later. The graduate attacker McGrath looked to have put the Valiants back ahead to enter the fourth quarter with his fourth score of the day with 4:15 to go, but the Hawks' John Reese scored his 14
th of the year with 1:03 to go in the third to set up an exciting final 15 minutes tied at 9-9.
Defense took hold of the final quarter as the two attack units combined for 17 shots after logging 25 in the period prior. While the Valiants did hold a 9-8 shot advantage in the quarter, only one Manhattanville shot was on goal. The Hawks, meanwhile, made
Jason Frezza (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Portledge) work in net as the graduate goalie made seven saves in the fourth quarter as part of a 22-stop effort. The continued New Paltz pressure finally broke through with 2:15 to go in regulation as James Flanagan scored the ultimate game winner. Schneider had an offensive look in the closing seconds, but his shot attempt was blocked and the Hawks were able to collect the loose ball and run out the remaining clock.
