WAYNE, N.J. – Making their long-awaited return to the field for the first time since March 9, the Manhattanville College softball team split a Friday doubleheader at William Paterson. With the 3-0 win and 6-0 loss, the Valiants' record on the season moves to 3-7 overall.
Game One Recap: Manhattanville 3, William Paterson 0
The Valiants received a phenomenal pitching performance in the opener by
Charli Shinstine (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) to pick up the win. The junior threw a 109 pitch complete game, allowing just one hit and walking three across seven shutout innings. Shinstine struck out eight Pioneers, her second highest total in a game this season.
With Shinstine tossing a gem, the Valiants did not need much in the way of run support to take Game One. Lindsey Acker had a solid outing herself for William Paterson, holding Manhattanville scoreless through the first three innings. The first run of the pitching duel would finally cross in the fourth, as
Giovanna Liggett (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) led off the inning with a triple. Two batters later,
Rachel Coleman (Lake Forest, Calif./Mission Viejo) drove her home with a single through the left side to put the Valiants on the board.
Liggett struck again in the sixth with a lead off homer, her third deep fly of the season to give Manhattanville a 2-0 lead. The Valiants scratched out one more run in the seventh aftaer
Olivia Fasce (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) reached on a leadoff double. The rookie advanced up to third on a wild pitch before coming home on a
Jayleen Torres (Downey, Calif./Downey) single.
Shinstine retired the last eight batters she saw to secure the shutout win, improving to 3-5 on the year.
Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 0, William Paterson 6
The Pioneers plated all six of their runs in the first two innings as Jaelynn Miller silenced the Valiant bats in the nightcap to split the doubleheader.
With two gone and runners on second and third, Haley Weinberger hit a single that brought both runners home to give William Paterson a 2-0 lead in the first. A pair of leadoff singles in the second put William Paterson right back in the driver's seat, as Anna Nunziato connected with an RBI double before Caitlin Monahan drove home a pair with a single. The two RBI hit spelled an early end for
Emily Mottoshiski's (Craryville, N.Y./Taconic Hills) start, as the rookie would be charged with all six runs on six hits and a pair of walks in 1.1 innings.
Shinstine was tabbed to escape the inning and go the rest of the way, allowing just one more hit and striking out another four in her 4.2 innings. Despite another solid performance in the circle by Shinstine, the Valiants were unable to do much at the plate against Miller. While Manhattanville recorded seven hits, the Crimson and White were only able to get a runner to third base once in the game. Torres and
Amaya Esparza (Descansco, Calif./Granite Hills) each had a pair of hits, while Liggett had a double.
