Baseball Suffers First Conference Losses in Doubleheader at Saint Joseph's (Long Island)

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College baseball team was defeated in conference play for the first time this season on Sunday, dropping a pair of contests at Saint Joseph's (Long Island). The pair of losses drops the Valiants to 7-8 overall on the year.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 4, St. Joseph's 6
The Valiants started hot in the opener with a pair of runs in the first, but the Golden Eagles scored six unanswered runs to take Game One on Sunday.

After a pair of strong performances in yesterday's doubleheader, Joe McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) led off Sunday's opener with a single, his first of four hits on the day. After stealing second and advancing to third on a ground out, Frank Delgado (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) brought McDonald home with an RBI single. One batter later, Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) doubled to left to bring home Anthony Pressimone (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) with the second run of the inning.

The lead would be short-lived, as Brian Forbes hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to tie the game up. The Golden Eagles would score in each of the first three innings to take a 4-1 lead before plating another two runs in the fifth to chase starter Sean Demo (Bloomfield, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) out of the game. The junior allowed six runs on 10 hits, suffering his first loss of the season.

Trailing 6-2 entering the seventh, the Valiants put together a two-out rally. With runners at the corners, Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) hit a single into center field to score Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge). After Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Delgado collected his second RBI of the game with a single to score Nick Siano (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip). The Valiants had the tying run on second base, but Mandel fouled out to third base to end the game.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 4, St. Joseph's 8
Manhattanville carried the lead of Game Two into the eighth inning, but the Golden Eagles plated five runs to earn the come-from-behind win to complete the sweep.

Alby Ciuffetelli (Mahopac, N.Y./Yorktown) made his first start of the year, going 5.2 innings while allowing three runs on six hits and a pair of walks, striking out two. The runs were the first the senior has allowed in three appearances this season, as his ERA now sits at 2.53.

The Golden Eagles scored in the second, but a Silvestri RBI double that brought home Anthony Caputo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third. Saint Joseph's went back ahead in the bottom half of the frame, scoring a pair of runs on three hits to go ahead 3-1.

Manhattanville tied the game in the fifth as McDonald continued to hit, drilling an RBI double down the right field line to score Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach). Two batters later, Silvestri brought McDonald home on a fielder's choice. One inning later, Parisi cashed in with an RBI single to center field that brought home Joe Laporta.

The Valiants carried the lead into the bottom of the eighth, when the Golden Eagles hung a crooked number of the board with a five spot to pull back ahead. Saint Joseph's used six hits and a pair of Manhattanville errors to fuel their rally. Myles Durney (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester), DJ Nakashima (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) and Matthew Messina (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) each allowed two runs in the inning, with Durney taking the loss in the game after 1.1 innings of work.
