PURCHASE, N.Y. – It was a dominant display by the Manhattanville College softball team on Sunday, as the Valiants outscored Sarah Lawrence College 31-0 across both games of the doubleheader to sweep the Gryphons. While the bats led the way in both contests,
Charli Shinstine (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) added another chapter to the program record book in Game One, throwing the fourth no-hitter of her career. The pair of wins pushes the Valiants over .500 with an overall record of 14-12 and a mark of 9-1 in conference play.
Game One Recap: Manhattanville 18, Sarah Lawrence 0 (Five Innings)
The Valiants scored a season-high 18 runs in the opener while Shinstine was unhittable as Manhattanville took Game One via run rule in five innings.
Shinstine struck out 10 in her outing, only allowing a pair of runners to reach via a walk and a hit by pitch. The no-hitter was the program's first since May 2021 when Shinstine pitched three innings in a five-inning combined no-no against Old Westbury. The junior's ERA continues to fall, now sitting at 3.88 on the year.
Shinstine did not need much in the way of run support the way she was pitching on Sunday, but the Valiant bats knocked 15 hits to cruise to victory. After
Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts) got Manhattanville on the board with an RBI single in the first, the Crimson and White score seven in the second inning to open the floodgates.
Melissa Lopez (Whittier, Calif./California) hit an RBI double to put the Valiants up 2-0. A pair of walks and an single loaded the bases for
Amaya Esparza (Descansco, Calif./Granite Hills), who promptly lined a double to right center to score three more runs.
Rachel Coleman (Lake Forest, Calif./Mission Viejo) drove her catcher home in the next at bat with an RBI single before
Emily Mottoshiski (Craryville, N.Y./Taconic Hills) delivered the final blow of the inning with a two run double, putting the Valiants ahead 8-0.
After being held off the board in the third, the Valiants roared back with another crooked number in the fourth with nine runs scoring. A pair of walks and a hit batter brought Walsh up again with the bases juiced, driving in a pair with a single.
Giovanna Liggett (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) reached on an error that allowed
Jayleen Torres (Downey, Calif./Downey) to score before Shinstine drew a bases loaded walk to extend the lead to 12-0. Mottoshiski drove in another run with a single before Lopez hammered a grand slam for her first career home run as the Valiants went ahead by 17.
Coleman picked up the last RBI of the opener with a single in the fifth that plated Torres. Shinstine retired the last seven batters in order to close out the no-hitter.
Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 13, Sarah Lawrence 0 (Five Innings)
For an encore, the Valiant bats recorded a season-high 17 hits to complete the sweep of the Gryphons.
An eight-run first inning picked Manhattanville up right where the left off in the game prior, giving Mottoshiski plenty of breathing room in the circle before even delivering her first pitch. With the bases loaded and nobody away, Esparza hit a single to right field that scored the first two runs of the contest. Coleman followed that up with a double down the left field line to plate two more before Shinstine smashed the first home run of her career, a two-run blast that put the Valiants up 6-0. Torres added an RBI single four batters later while Walsh drew a bases loaded walk to put the Valiants up 8-0 before an out was recorded.
Mottoshiski was able to throw her best game of the season, striking out a career-high 11 in the five inning shutout. The rookie allowed just three hits while not walking a batter in a start for the first time this season. Mottoshiski has now pitched 10 consecutive scoreless innings.
In the second inning, Esparza drilled a two-run homer to center field to further the Valiants' lead to 10-0. Manhattanville added another in the third on a bases loaded walk drawn by Liggett before Esparza struck again with another two-run blast in the fifth. The pair of homers brings Esparza's season total to six, tied for most on the team with Liggett.
