PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College softball team completed a perfect 4-0 week on Saturday, taking both ends of the doubleheader against the College of Mounts Saint Vincent. The Valiants scored a total of 22 runs across the two games, winning both via run rule to improve to 18-12 overall and 11-1 in Skyline Conference play.
Game One Recap: Manhattanville 13, Mount Saint Vincent 0 (Five Innings)
The Valiants plated runs in all five innings of the opener, recording a season-high 19 hits to roll past the Dolphins to take Game One.
Jayleen Torres (Downey, Calif./Downey) opened up the game with a leadoff double, coming around to score on a
Giovanna Liggett (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) sacrifice fly to give the Valiants an early 1-0 lead. Torres would double again in the second to bring home a pair of runs in
Melissa Lopez (Whittier, Calif./California) and
Charli Shinstine (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy). After Torres advanced to third on a wild pitch,
Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts) drove her home with a single to give Manhattanville a 4-0 lead.
After
Emily Mottoshiski (Craryville, N.Y./Taconic Hills) drove home one with an RBI single in the third, the Valiants hung another three runs in the fourth. Back-to-back RBI singles off the bats of Shinstine and Lopez plated the first two before Mottoshiski drew a walk to load the bases.
Olivia Fasce (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) followed that up with a walk of her own to put the Valiants up 8-0.
Manhattanville had their best offensive inning in the fifth, scoring another five runs to blow the game open. Liggett and
Amaya Esparza (Descansco, Calif./Granite Hills) hit back-to-back doubles to score one before
Rachel Coleman (Lake Forest, Calif./Mission Viejo) and Shinstine lined consecutive singles to left to score another. Lopez capped off the run with a three run blast, her second homer of the year to extend the lead up to 13.
Mottoshiski had another strong start in the circle, pitching her fourth consecutive shutout. The rookie allowed three hits with no walks while striking out four. Walsh made her fourth pitching appearance of the year to close out the game, pitching a perfect fifth inning.
Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 9, Mount Saint Vincent 1 (Six Innings)
It was another run rule victory in the backend of the doubleheader, as the Valiants scored nine straight runs to earn the win.
The Dolphins did strike first, plating a run in the bottom of the first off of Mottoshiski to end her scoreless streak at 19 innings. However, that would be all Mount Saint Vincent would be able to muster offensively against the pitching tandem on Mottoshiski and Walsh the rest of the way.
Manhattanville tied the game in the second as Lopez scored on a wild pitch. The Valiants would then hang four in the third to take the lead for good. Esparza put Manhattanville up with a leadoff home run, her seventh of the year. After Coleman and Lopez reached on a pair of singles, Mottoshiski doubled to right field to score Coleman. Torres then dropped a single to left field to score two more runs and put the Valiants ahead 5-1.
After two scoreless innings, the Valiant bats plated another four in the sixth. A Liggett double scored Walsh, before the senior advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. Shinstine then wrapped things up with a two-run homer, her second deep ball of the year. The Dolphins would be blanked in the bottom half as the Valiants won their third-straight game via run rule.
Mottoshiski got the second-straight start, pitching three scoreless innings after giving up the run in the first. She would allow three hits while striking out two, once again not issuing any walks as she earned her seventh win of the year. Her ERA on the season continues to fall, now sitting at 5.89. Walsh then closed out the game with a scoreless two innings of work, allowing a hit and walking one while recording one strikeout. The rookie is now at 11.2 innings pitched this season without allowing an earned run.
