FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Back in action for the first time in six days at the varsity level, the Manhattanville College baseball team split a doubleheader on Saturday at Farmingdale State. Following the pair of games, the Valiants stand at 8-9 overall and sport a 5-3 record in the Skyline Conference.
Game One Recap: Manhattanville 1, Farmingdale 7
It was all Rams in the opener, as Farmingdale used a five-run fifth to put the seven inning affair out of reach.
Travis Brescia (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) was able to get through his first four innings of work with limited damage, allowing just a pair of runs, but the Farmingdale five spot in his final inning of work put a damper on his outing. The junior fell to 2-2 on the season after pitching five complete innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and a pair of walks. Brescia retired three Rams via strikeout.
On the other side, Stephen Clancy worked around seven Manhattanville hits to toss a one-run complete game. The Farmingdale starter struck out seven to hold the Valiant offense to the lone run.
The Valiants' run would come in the sixth. With one away,
Joe McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) legged out an infield single.
Frank Delgado (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) advanced him to third with a double to left center before the rookie McDonald came home on a
Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) ground out.
Jackson Branigan (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) made his varsity debut, pitching a scoreless sixth inning while striking out one.
Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) added a double in the seventh, his fourth two-bagger of the year.
Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 4, Farmingdale 2
The Valiants were able to shake off the rough opener to close out the day with a win, scoring three in the fifth inning to take a lead they held the rest of the way.
The Rams got on the board first in the fourth on a Danny Wolf sacrifice fly, but the lead would be short-lived as the Valiants hung three on starter Joe Marino in their next turn at-bat. With a runner on and two away,
Anthony Pressimone (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) hit a single to centerfield the began a rally. With a pair of ducks on the pond, Delgado once again came up clutch, lining a triple to right center to plate
Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) and Pressimone and take their first lead of the day. Delgado would score in the next at bat off a Silvestri single.
Given the lead,
Ray White (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) was able to do enough on the mound to secure his fourth win of the year. Â The rookie tossed six innings, allowing a pair of runs (one earned) on five hits. While the Rams would get one back off of White in the fifth, he would close out his final inning of work stranding a runner on second before turning things over to the pen.
The Valiants went back up by two in the sixth, as
Tyler Viscusi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) came home on a Parisi ground out.
John Millicker (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) was the first relief arm out of the pen, making his season debut. After a 1-2-3 seventh, the junior allowed a pair of singles in the eighth. With the tying runs now on board, the Valiants brought in
Thomas Iazzetta (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) to navigate trouble. The Rams tried to pull back within a run on a double steal, but Bobby Pollock was nabbed at home. Iazzetta then got a strike out to end the inning with no runs coming across.
Iazzetta went three up, three down in the ninth to pick up his third save of the year. McDonald and Silvestri each nabbed a pair of bases in the win.
