MANSFIELD, CONN. – The Manhattanville College baseball team was defeated in both ends of their doubleheader on Wednesday, dropping a pair of contests to No. 2 Eastern Connecticut. With the pair of losses, the Valiants fell to 17-12 on the year.
Game One Recap: Manhattanville 1, Eastern Connecticut 3
In Game One, the Valiants had little answers to Aidan Dunn on the mound, as the Warriors starter struck out 11 in 5.2 innings, allowing just two hits and one run. While Manhattanville would finally get on the board in the sixth inning, the three run lead Eastern Connecticut built out over the first four innings was enough to win the pitcher's duel.
Ian Murray (Commack, N.Y./Commack) pitched well in the start for Manhattanville, going five innings and allowing three runs on four hits while striking out two.
Matthew Messina (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) pitched a scoreless inning in relief, allowing one hit in the sixth while striking out one.
Despite the effective outing by Murray, the Warriors plated a run in each of the first two innings before tacking on a third insurance run in the fourth. Manhattanville, meanwhile, would be held to just one hit over the first five innings, a
Frank Delgado (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) infield single.
Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) finally got the Valiants a runner in scoring position with a leadoff double in the sixth, ultimately coming around to score on a bases loaded walk. Reliever Bryan Albee was able to bounce back from the free pass, however, getting
Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) to ground out to end the inning before setting down the Vals in order in the seventh to earn the save and take Game One for the Warriors.
Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 6, Eastern Connecticut 11 (7 Innings)
While the second game of the day featured significantly more offense than the opener, the Valiants were unable to come back from eight straight runs scored by the Warriors as Eastern Connecticut completed the sweep.
Manhattanville struck first in the opening frame, as
Anthony Pressimone (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) lined a single to right field with the bases loaded to plate
Joe McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) and
Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac). Manhattanville would be held to two runs, as the inning came to an end with back-to-back strikeouts.
The Valiant lead was short lived, as the Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the first with a two run single of their own. Eastern Connecticut added two more runs in the third before blowing the game open with a four spot in the third inning.
Sean Demo's (Bloomfield, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) start would come to an end after three innings of work, allowing four runs on six hits.
Jackson Branigan (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) would be charged for all four runs in the fourth, recording just one out before his outing came to an end.
Manhattanville got two runs back in the fifth off a Musantry RBI double and a
Tyler Viscusi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) one-run single. After the Warriors used a Luke Broadhurst solo home run to plate another run of their own in the bottom half, the Valiants continued to claw back with another two runs in the sixth. Silvestri singled to right to bring Parisi home before
Joe LaPorta (Centerech, N.Y./Centereach) scored
Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) with a single of his own, cutting the lead down to 9-6.
However, the Warriors scratched out two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to go back up by five. The Valiants showed signs of life after back-to-back leadoff singles by Viscusi and Delgado, but the next three Manhattanville batters were set down in order to close out the game.
Joseph Lacoparra (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had the best performance on the mound in the game for Manhattanville, tossing 1.2 innings and allowing one run on three hits.
Thomas Iazzetta (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) surrendered a pair of runs in his inning of work.
