PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College baseball team celebrated Senior Day on Sunday with a win, defeating John Jay College by a final of 8-5. The Valiants improve to 19-14 on the year with the win.
Prior to first pitch, the Valiants honored the Class of 2022 to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of the upcoming graduates.
Fittingly it was the seniors doing a majority of the work on the mound, as three senior arms combined for 8.2 innings of work.
Tyler Viscusi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) got the start, tossing five innings and allowing a pair of runs on four hits while striking out two to earn his second win of the year.
DJ Nakashima (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) and Bryant Grant went a total of 3.2 innings out of the pen, striking out a batter each.
It was a quick start for the Bloodhounds, as back-to-back singles off of Viscusi put the senior in a tricky spot. While one run did ultimately come around to score, the Wappingers Falls native was able to escape any further damage to bring the Manhattanville bats to the plate.
Manhattanville's leading run scorer once again got things started as
Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) reached in the bottom of the first with a one out single. After moving up 90 feet on
Anthony Quatrochi's (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) single, Bornkamp stole third and was able to tie the game on
Tyler Mandel's (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) sacrifice fly.
The bats then knocked six hits in the second inning to score five runs, putting the Valiants ahead. Viscusi helped his own cause on the mound, lining an RBI single that brought
Brian Alberts (Bronx, N.Y./Iona Prep) across the plate. Bornkamp then knocked
Anthony Pressimone (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) in with a single ahead of Quatrochi recording his second RBI of the afternoon with a single that scored Viscusi. Up 4-1, the rally continued as Bornkamp scored on a wild pitch while Mandel doubled to drive home Quatrochi with the fifth run of the frame for the Valiants.
John Jay got a run back with a solo home run in the third, but a
Matt Tuite (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) single in the fourth allowed Viscusi to score and reestablish the five run lead to enter the fifth.
The score held at 7-2 as Nakashima spelled Viscsui on the mound in the sixth. Nakashima would throw 2.2 scoreless innings, successfully holding the Bloodhounds at bay.
Manhattanville tacked on one more in the eighth, as Bornkamp scored on a Tuite fielder's choice. While Grant recorded the final out of the eighth with ease, the senior reliever found some trouble trying to close things down in the ninth. After a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases, John Jay scored a run on a passed ball. Another walk made the bases full again, while a hit by pitch and a walk allowed two more runs to cross.
Jackson Branigan (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) then received the call to close the door, responding by getting the game-ending ground out to earn the save.
