Baseball Bested Twice by Mount Saint Vincent

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Kicking off the final weekend of the regular season, the Manhattanville College baseball team was swept by the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Saturday's doubleheader. The losses drops the Valiants to 20-15 overall and 11-7 in Skyline Conference play, now sitting in fourth in the conference standings with one more day left in the season tomorrow.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 0, Mount Saint Vincent 8
The Dolphins hit early and often in the opener, plating all eight of their runs in the first three innings to take the opener.

It was a rough day at the office for starter Alby Ciuffetelli (Mahopac, N.Y./Yorktown) who was only able to last two innings in the start. The senior was tagged for six runs (five earned) on seven hits while striking out one. Mount Saint Vincent used five hits in the first to score their runs, including RBI singles by Michael Grisanti and Joey DiNorcia. Three more runs came around in the second on a pair of hits and three errors.

The Valiants go their first hits of the afternoon in the bottom of the second as Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and Tyler Viscusi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) hit a pair of two out singles, but the rally came to a halt there as a groundout got the Dolphins out of the inning without any damage. Myles Durney (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) came out of the pen for the third, surrendering a pair of runs on two hits as Mount Saint Vincent's lead grew to 8-0.

The Valiants mustered just two more hits over the rest of the game, a pair of Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) singles. DJ Nakashima (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) and John Millicker (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) pitched well in relief, combining for a scoreless 3.1 innings of work to close out the game, but the early Dolphin offense was enough to take the opener.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 3, Mount Saint Vincent 9
A four-run fifth for the Dolphins was the difference maker in Game Two as Mount Saint Vincent completed the sweep to jump the Valiants for third place in the conference standings.

The Valiant bats faired much better in the finale with nine hits. Joe McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) led off the bottom of the first with a single and came around to score with the game's first run on a wild pitch and a pair of ground outs to spot Viscusi an early lead on the mound.

The senior Viscusi was able to keep it a 1-0 game for the Valiants until the rough fourth inning. After allowing just one base hit in the first three innings that was quickly erased on a pick off, the Dolphins used four hits and a pair of errors to blow the game open with a five spot. Only one of the runs would end up being earned, and Viscusi was able to bounce back for a strong outing. He went seven innings, allowing six hits and three walks while striking out four.

The Valiants got back on the board in the sixth. After Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) reached with a one out double, back-to-back singles by Frank Delgado (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and Musantry allowed the senior DH score Manhattanville's second run.

The Dolphins plated two runs on four hits in the eighth inning off of Joseph Lacoparra (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac). While Jaden Colon (New Rochelle, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) was able to get one back for the Valiants in the bottom half with an unearned run, Lacoparra would be charged with two more runs in the ninth as the Valiants were unable to do any damage in their final at-bats to fall in Game Two.
