Baseball Scores Most Runs In Three Years In 23-0 Win Over Lehman

PURCHASE, N.Y. – In a downright dominant performance, the Manhattanville College baseball team scored its highest single-game run total since 2019, shutting out Lehman 23-0 on Tuesday. The win improves the Valiants' record on the season to 10-10.

The final score could have gotten further out of hand as the game was called off after the Valiants batted in the bottom of the seventh due to darkness. The 23 runs is the most since Manhattanville scored a program-record 33 against Wilkes in 2019.

Despite the massive total in the run column, the Valiants only recorded 15 hits. Manhattanville was able to do damage with patience at the plate, drawing 15 walks. It's the most walks drawn by the Valiants in a single game since at least 2006, which is as far back as the available game-by-game statistics go. Ten different batters drew a free pass in the game, including four by Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge). The senior outfielder made the most of his trips on the bags, scoring four runs.

The Valiants struck in the first as Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) drove home a pair on a two-run single. Four batters later, Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) plated another two with a double. Manhattanville got one more run in the inning on a Matt Tuite (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) groundout that allowed Anthony Pressimone (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) to score.

After a scoreless second, the Valiants struck for another six runs in the third. Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach), Joe McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) and Bornkamp drew three consecutive bases loaded walks to plate three runs. Silvestri and Joe LaPorta (Centerech, N.Y./Centereach) were then both hit by pitches to score another two before Pressimone plated Bornkamp on a fielder's choice to give the Valiants an 11-0 lead.

In the fourth, Parisi, Silvestri, Laporta and Pressimone each drove in a run to extend the Vals' lead up to 15. An eight-run fifth capped off the offensive eruption. Mandel led off with a solo home run, his second of the season. Three batters later, McDonald drove in a pair with a double before scoring on a bases loaded walk drawn by Laporta. Pressimone drove in one more with a bases loaded single before Frank Delgado (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and Matthew Messina (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) drew two more bases loaded walks to score two more. Parisi drove in the 23rd run of the affair with an RBI single to score Pressimone.

With the lead from the get-go, Tyler Viscusi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) had smooth sailing in his first pitching start of the year. The senior went six innings, allowing just three walks and walking three while striking out six. Jay Lockwood (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) got the seventh inning duties, striking out a pair.

With tomorrow's game against Western Connecticut postponed due to inclement weather, the Valiants will be back in action on Saturday for a Skyline doubleheader at Saint Joseph's (Brooklyn) beginning at noon.
